Cold Shot

In college, Griffin McCray and his four best friends had their lives planned out. Griffin and Luke Gallagher would join the Baltimore PD. Declan Gray would head to the FBI and Parker Mitchell would go on to graduate school as a crime scene analyst. But then Luke vanished before graduation and their world--and friendships--crumbled.

Now Griffin is a park ranger at Gettysburg, having left life as a SWAT-team sniper when a case went bad. The job is mostly quiet--until the day he captures two relic hunters uncovering skeletal remains near Little Round Top.

Griffin just wants the case to go away, but charming forensic anthropologist Finley Scott determines that the body is modern--a young social justice lawyer missing since spring--and all evidence points to the work of an expert sniper.

When FBI agent Declan Gray takes over the case, past and present collide. Griffin soon realizes he'll need to confront some of the darkest days of his life if he--and those he cares about--are going to escape a downward spiral of murder that crosses continents.

After loving the Alaskan Courage series I knew her next series would be on my TBR list!. We are introduced to a new set of interesting characters - all friends for a long time. This first book introduces the characters and focuses on Griffin and Finley. Griffin likes his solitary job as a park ranger, it helps to keep the past where he wants it. When Finley starts spending time in the park on a dig, his heart begins to thaw. When a body is uncovered and determined to be recent his solitary life is a thing of the past, especially when his friends show up to help.  Once the identity of the body is determined the suspense picks up with many trying to keep everything buried.  Griffin and Finley's romance, while a part of the story, did not overtake it. There are hints to what the other characters will be dealing with in future books.  A clean read with some faith elements. A great start to this new series.

The Painter's Daughter

Sophia Dupont assists her father in his studio, keeping her own artwork out of sight. In private, she paints the picturesque north Devon Coast, popular with artists—including handsome Wesley Overtree, who seems more interested in her than the landscape.

Captain Stephen Overtree is accustomed to taking on his brother Wesley's responsibilities. Near the end of his leave, he is sent to find his brother and bring him home. Upon reaching Devonshire, however, Stephen is stunned to learn Wesley has sailed for Italy and left his host's daughter in serious trouble.

Stephen feels duty-bound to act, and strangely protective of the young lady, who seems somehow familiar. Wanting to make some recompense for his own past failings as well as his brother's, Stephen proposes to Miss Dupont. He does not offer love, but marriage "in name only" to save her from scandal. If he dies in battle as he fears, she will at least be a respectable widow.

Sophie makes a very hard decision and knows whatever she decides it will affect her life profoundly.  Both Stephen and Sophie want to honor their decision and each other, rather than be selfish.  In today's world, I find that refreshing and hopeful. The secondary characters with their traits, secrets, and the mystery also  make this such an enjoyable novel.  The author kept me glued to the pages (despite the length) caring for these characters and wanting to find out what happens knowing the prodigal son is going to return.  There was such tension at the end that I was gripping the book so hard wondering if the ending I wanted was going to be delivered.  A great read.

Beyond All Dreams

Is bringing the truth to light worth risking all they've ever dreamed for their futures?

Anna O'Brien leads a predictable and quiet life as a map librarian at the illustrious Library of Congress until she stumbles across the baffling mystery of a ship disappeared at sea. Thwarted in her attempts to uncover information, her determination outweighs her shyness and she turns to a dashing congressman for help.

Luke Callahan was one of the nation's most powerful congressmen before his promising career was shadowed in scandal. Eager to share in a new cause and intrigued by the winsome librarian, he joins forces with Anna to solve the mystery of the lost ship. Opposites in every way, Anna and Luke are unexpectedly drawn to each other despite the strict rules forbidding Anna from any romantic entanglements with members of Congress.

From the gilded halls of the Capitol where powerful men shape the future of the nation, to the scholarly archives of the nation's finest library, Anna and Luke are soon embroiled in secrets much bigger and more perilous than they ever imagined. Is bringing the truth to light worth risking all they've ever dreamed for their futures?

It is great when an author tells such a great story that it has me wanting to learn more about the subject of their story. In this case it is the Library of Congress. As a woman Anna has to be careful of her reputation as any impropriety could be the end of her job at the Library of Congress. It has not been too long that women have been allowed to hold such a position with the Library. This is no problem for her as she prefers to stay out of any limelight and keep to herself. She meets Luke when he loses his position on a Committee and is forced into another "lesser" committee. Luke is immediately intrigued by Anna and is more than happy to help her out with her determination to find out what really happened to her father's ship fifteen years ago. They are drawn to each other, but Anna fights it because of her fears.  Both of them have lived through difficult childhoods that are heartbreaking, but instilled in them strong desires for their future. I love how both characters helped each other with their weaknesses and ended up being a great fit.  The secondary characters were just a rich and added another layer to the story.  I recommend this book to those who love historical fiction.

Silenced by Dani Pettrey

A relaxing day of rock climbing takes a disturbing turn when Kayden McKenna’s route leads her to a face-to-face encounter with a dead climber. Is it a terrible accident or something sinister? When the case is handed to the overburdened sheriff, he turns to Jake Westin. With Jake’s past now revealed, he’s ready to use his talent for investigation again-–but he could never prepare for where the case will take him.

Kayden and Jake soon realize that the death was no accident. And worse, it seems the killer is on to them. When strange things begin happening in Yancey, Jake is terrified that once again his world may put someone he loves in danger.

But the truth is far worse than either of them imagine.

Kayden is a strong, independent woman determined to live a healthy life with a secret fear.  Jake had a past that he kept secret for a long time, but it has finally been revealed.  We met both characters in the previous Alaskan Courage books, and watched them slowly draw closer to each other. When the discovery is ruled a murder they work together to figure out what happened and why. The action and suspense is written very well without explicit details. The McKenna family is close and in their tight knit community each one is involved in solving the mystery of the incidents directed towards Kayden and Jake that are no accidents.  The series concludes with Reef's story in Sabotaged.

Princess Ever After

Regina Beswick was born to be a princess.

But she’s content to be a small-town girl, running a classic auto restoration shop, unaware a secret destiny awaits her. One that will leap from the pages of her grandmother’s hand-painted book of fairytales.

Tanner Burkhardt is the stoic Minister of Culture for the Grand Duchy of Hessenberg. When he is tasked to retrieve the long-lost princess, he must overcome his fear of failure in order to secure his nation’s future—and his own.

Yet lurking in the political shadows is a fierce opponent with sinister plans to abolish the throne forever. Overwhelmed with opposition, Regina must decide if she’s destined to restore old cars or an ancient nation. Together—with a little divine intervention—Regina and Tanner discover the truth of her heritage and the healing power of true love.

Regina is not princess material, and that makes her such a wonderful character.  She has just had her first success restoring a car and her business is taking off.  Tanner's news throws a wrench into her continued plans.   He has committed to helping her fulfill her grandmother's legacy, while struggling with regrets from his past. Both characters are  easy to relate to and it was not hard to love them both. Of course, since this is a fairy tale, things do work out in the end, but it was a bumpy, emotional and enjoyable ride.

The Dancing Master

Finding himself the man of the family, London dancing master Alec Valcourt moves his mother and sister to remote Devonshire, hoping to start over. But he is stunned to learn the village matriarch has prohibited all dancing, for reasons buried deep in her past.

Alec finds an unlikely ally in the matriarch's daughter. Though he's initially wary of Julie Midwinter's reckless flirtation, he comes to realize her bold exterior disguises a vulnerable soul—and hidden sorrows of her own.

Julia is quickly attracted to the handsome dancing master—a man her mother would never approve of—but she cannot imagine why Mr. Valcourt would leave London, or why he evades questions about his past. With Alec's help, can Julia uncover old secrets and restore life to her somber village . . . and to her mother's tattered heart?

Julia comes across as a selfish, entitled young girl until you get to know her and understand her heart and hurts. Her mother is instantly unlikeable, but as we learn the secrets she is keeping it becomes clear she needs some healing and forgiveness herself. Alec is immediately likeable and determined to make a new start for his family. Secrets play a big part in the story and changes for the better happen when they come to light.  Another great story that teaches, enlightens and entertains.

Stranded by Dani Pettrey

When her friend vanishes from a cruise ship, reporter Darcy St. James isn’t satisfied with their explanation that she simply left her job of her own accord. Something isn’t lining up, and Darcy believes the only way to find the truth is to put herself in Abby’s position.

Within days, Darcy learns her friend wasn’t the only person to disappear mysteriously. Last summer, a woman vanished under almost identical circumstances.

Gage McKenna has taken a summer-long stint leading adventure excursions for the passengers of various cruise lines that dock for a few days of sightseeing. He’s surprised to find Darcy working aboard one of the ships, investigating a troubling report.

Something sinister is going on, and the deeper they dig, the more Gage fears they’ve only discovered the tip of the iceberg.

The first two books in this series, Submerged and Shattered were page turning delights. I was looking forward to Darcy and Gage's story in this third installment. The suspense and investigation of Darcy's missing friend overshadowed their romance and I was a bit disappointed. The action and adventure was non-stop and well written - it kept me glued to the pages to find out what happened to Abby.  I found myself more interested in Kayden and Jake and hope they get their own story.

Unrivaled

Lucy Kendall returns from a tour of the Continent, her luggage filled with the latest fashions and a mind fired by inspiration. After tasting Europe's best confections, she's sure she'll come up with a recipe that will save her father's struggling candy business and reverse their fortunes. But she soon discovers that their biggest competitor, the cheat who swindled her father out of his prize recipe, has now hired a promotions manager-a cocky, handsome out-of-towner who gets under Lucy's skin.

Charlie Clarke's new role at Standard Manufacturing is the chance of a lifetime. He can put some rough times behind him and reconnect with the father he's never known. The one thing he never counted on, however, was tenacious Lucy Kendall. She's making his work life miserable...and making herself impossible for him to forget

Siri's books always give me a great story as well as teaching me something new and interesting. In this case, it is candy making. Lucy is at first is difficult to like, she comes across as selfish and spoiled, but as the story progresses we understand her and are more understanding. Charlie is easy to like, it was humerous at times to watch him go from a street kid to a gentlemen's son. He wanted to rise above his past and become a better person.  I liked that the story is told in alternating chapters of Lucy and Charlie's POV. It allows for a broader view of both sides of the story.

Shattered

Piper McKenna couldn’t be more thrilled that her prodigal brother, Reef, has returned to Yancey, Alaska, after five years. But her happiness is short-lived when Reef appears at her house covered in blood. A fellow snowboarder has been killed. Despite the evidence, Reef swears he’s innocent. And Piper believes him.

Deputy Landon Grainger loves the McKennas like family, but he’s also sworn to find the truth, and he knows those closest to you have the power to deceive you the most. With the sheriff pushing for a quick conviction, pursuing the truth in this case could mean the end of Landon’s career.

As Piper wages her own search, the two head deep into Canada’s rugged backcountry–and unexpected complications. Not only does their long friendship seem to be turning into something more, but the search for answers is becoming deadlier with each step.

This is book two in the Alaskan Courage series, but stands alone well. After enjoying the first book (the author's debut), I looked forward to this story. The author almost lost me near the beginning using a plot device I detest: Boy likes/loves girl A, but there is girl B who loves/wants boy. Girl B gets herself in compromising position with boy and girl A shows up, sees and misinterprets. Thankfully, it did not overshadow the mystery and the story moved on without anymore from Girl B! The author kept me guessing as the suspense built with each twist and turn.  I liked getting to know this family better and look forward to the next installment.

All Things New

The war is over. The South has lost.

Josephine Weatherly struggles to pick up the pieces of her life when her family returns to their Virginia plantation. But the realities of life after the war cannot be denied: her home and land are but a shell of their previous grandeur; death has claimed her father and brother; and her remaining brother, Daniel, has returned home bitter and broken.

Her life of privilege, a long-ago dream.

Josephine soon realizes that life is now a matter of daily survival--and recognizes that Lizzie, as one of the few remaining servants, is the one she must rely on to teach her all she needs to know. Josephine's mother, too, vows to rebuild White Oak--but a bitter hatred fuels her.

Can hope--and a battered faith in God--survive amid the devastation?
Sometimes I hesitate to read Christian Fiction about a subject that I know can be filled with bitterness, hatred, rage, betrayal and pain as I wonder if it will be "sugar coated" to meet certain CF requirements.  No hesitation was needed with this book as the author dealt with it all honestly.  I appreciated that it did not end all neatly tied up, I was left wondering what decision the characters eventually made.   The story is told in the voices of three women, Eugenia, a Southern lady, her daughter, Josephine and Lizzie their former slave, now freed.  The three POVs added dimension to the story and gave a broader perspective to what each was dealing with in the aftermath of the War.   The secondary characters are just as interesting. The message that joy can be found no matter what the circumstances is one that is needed today.

The Messenger

Hannah Sunderland felt content in her embrace of the Quaker faith until her twin brother ran off and joined the army and ended up captured and in jail. Suddenly Hannah's world turns on end. She longs to bring her brother some measure of comfort in the squalid, frigid prison where he remains. But the Quakers believe they are not to take sides, not to take up arms. Can she sit by and do nothing while he suffers?

Jeremiah Jones has an enormous task before him. Responsibility for a spy ring is now his, and he desperately needs access to the men in prison, whom they are seeking to free. A possible solution is to garner a pass for Hannah. But while she is fine to the eye, she holds only disdain for him--and agreeing would mean disobeying those she loves and abandoning a bedrock of her faith.

With skill and sensitivity, Mitchell tells a story of two unlikely heroes seeking God's voice, finding the courage to act, and discovering the powerful embrace of love.
I have long been a fan of Siri's books.  The subject matter of Quakerism and the Revolutionary War really had my interest. I enjoyed learning more about the Quaker's beliefs and was surprised at what I did not know. Hannah and Jeremiah are an unlikely couple, and the author does a good job with both their voices.  I was totally absorbed in the book .

The Rose of Winslow Street

The last thing Libby Sawyer and her father expected upon their return from their summer home was to find strangers inhabiting a house that had been in their family for twenty years. Widower Michael Dobrescu brought his family from Romania to the town of Colden, Massachusetts, with a singular purpose: to claim the house willed to his father. Since neither party has any intention of giving up their claim, a fierce legal battle ensues between the two families.

When Libby’s father’s most important and sensitive documents go missing, Michael and his family are the likely culprits. Determined to discover the truth behind the stolen papers, Libby investigates, only to find herself unconvinced that Michael’s to blame and at risk of developing feelings for this man with the mysterious past.

When it seems the papers have indeed made it into the wrong hands and a decision about the house is pending in the courts, Libby must weigh the risks of choosing a side and giving her heart to a man whose intentions and affections are less than certain.
This book was an utter delight. The house takeover hooked me right from the get go and never lost my attention. I liked the variety of character personalities the author gives us.  A couple of them have difficulties they are dealing with daily. The themes of prejudice, loyalty, responsibility, family and faith get you stirred up and then thinking how you would react.  A thoroughly enjoyable read.

A Heart Most Worthy

The elegance of Madame Forza's gown shop is a far cry from the downtrodden North End of Boston. Yet each day Julietta, Annamaria, and Luciana enter the world of the upper class, working on finery for the elite in society. The three beauties each long to break free of their obligations and embrace the American dream--and their chance for love. But the ways of the heart are difficult to discern at times.

Julietta is drawn to the swarthy, mysterious Angelo.

Annamaria has a star-crossed encounter with the grocer's son, a man from the entirely wrong family. And through no intent of her own,

Luciana catches the eye of Billy Quinn, the son of Madame Forza's most important client.

Their destinies intertwined, each harboring a secret from their families and each other, will they be found worthy of the love they seek?

Every Siri Mitchell book that I've read I have thoroughly enjoyed. It did not take long to get lost in the story of 3 young girls from immigrant families with hopes and dreams for their lives while dealing with the expectations of their families.  The girls work together and their lives intersect with a couple of twists but eventually get their happy ending.

Hatteras Girl

There are two things twenty-nine-year-old Jackie Donovan asks God for: an honest, wonderful man to marry, and to own a bed-and-breakfast in the Outer Banks region. In the meantime, Jackie works for Lighthouse Views magazine, writing articles about other local business owners, and intrepidly goes on the blind dates set up by her well-meaning but oh-so-clueless relatives.

There's one specific property Jackie dreams of purchasing: the Bailey Place, a fabulous old home where Jackie spent many happy childhood afternoons, a place that has now fallen into disrepair because of its outrageous price tag.

When Jackie meets handsome Davis Erickson, who holds the key to the Bailey Place, Jackie is sure God has answered both her prayers. But as Jackie learns some disturbing details about Davis's past, she begins to question her own motivation. Will she risk her long-held dreams to find out the truth?
Another fictional bed and breakfast I want to visit! This is my first Alice J. Wisler book and definitely won't be my last. She has created wonderful characters that are easy to love and root for as you sympathize with their struggles. It is a hard lesson to learn to wait when your impulse is to rush it because everything "seemingly" looks right.  Savor this book on a lazy afternoon or better yet, at the beach!

Masquerade

They risk it all for adventure and romance, but find that love only flourishes in truth...

1886, New York City: Charlotte Gleason, a rich heiress from England, escapes a family crisis by traveling to America in order to marry the even wealthier Conrad Tremaine. She soon decides that an arranged marriage is not for her and persuades her maid, Dora, to take her place. She wants a chance at "real life," even if it means giving up financial security. For Charlotte, it's a risk she's willing to take. What begins as the whim of a spoiled rich girl wanting adventure becomes a test of survival amid poverty beyond Charlotte's blackest nightmares.

As for Dora, it's the chance of a lifetime. She lives a fairy tale complete with gowns, jewels, and lavish mansions--yet is tormented by guilt from the possibility of discovery and the presence of another love that will not die. Is this what her heart truly longs for? Will their masquerade be discovered? Will one of them have second thoughts? There is no guarantee the switch will work. It's a risk. It's the chance of a lifetime......

Nancy Moser has quickly become a favorite author. I have not read a book of hers that I did not like. They are not only entertaining, but enlightening as well. I love the historical facts she includes at the end of her books. While this one had a predictable ending, it was a fun read and causes you to wonder how far would you go to change your life. Is there someone you would like to trade places with (really)?
Thank you to Bethany House for providing the book for review.
