Seven Minutes In Heaven (audio)

All of Eugenia Snowe’s problems start when Edward Reeve, an arrogant bastard son of an earl, bursts into her registry office. He wants a governess and he wants her. She gives him the governess he demands, but she refuses to give herself.

No question that Eugenia enjoys crossing wits with the brilliant inventor, but she will never tarnish her reputation with an affaire, particularly with a man who doesn’t realize she’s a lady!

She holds her ground…until he kidnaps her.

Ward will stop at nothing to convince Eugenia that they’re meant to be together. He promises her heaven.

She gives him seven minutes.

We met Eugenia and Ward when they were children in earlier books, they were fun, loveable characters. As adults they are even more loveable, quirky and . Ward is in desperate need of a governess that will stay and help him with his young siblings that recently became orphans. Their Grandmother is filing a petition to have them removed from his care because the kids are behaving strangely in her opinion. He is a successful inventor, but doesn't know how to help them through this grief. When his second governess leaves he demands that Eugenia provide him with another governess. She refuses and he practically kidnaps her to get her to come and meet his siblings to determine the best kind of governess for them. Eugenia has always had great success with her governess placements and is sure that Ward is at fault. She agrees to meet the children. Lizzie and Otis had an unusual upbringing, and Eugenia can relate as she had the same. She encourages them to be themselves and Ward is not happy as he wants them to conform to society rules as he believes that is how he will get permanent custody of the kids. Eugenia has been a widow of seven years and is ready for a change. Ward is attracted to her, but thinks that because of her upbringing she will not be the right kind of wife for him. His reaction was disappointing and I wasn't sure if he deserved Eugenia. Susan Duerden, as usual, does a fantastic job narrating the hilarity, banter and emotion of the characters.

Weekly Reading Wrap Up (SP/IMWAYR?)

Under Pressure by Lori Foster (#1)
Leese has not regretted giving up his career as a MMA fighter to take a job with a premier body guard agency. His latest job is to find and protect Catalina  It doesn't take Leese long to find Cat, but convincing her that he has been hired to help is a huge problem. Cat has overheard something that has put a target on her back and knows she can't trust anyone.  She reluctantly agrees to go with Leese, but keeps a secret that will put both their lives in danger. We met Leese in the series right before this one and even though he screwed up in a big way, he was likeable and I was glad to see he was getting his own story. A lot of action, suspense and a couple of twists made this a great start to a new series.

Searching for Disaster by Jennifer Probst (audio) #4.6
Isabella and Liam met six years ago at a college party and they both felt a connection. Unfortunately Izzy was at a bad place in her life with drugs and her addiction won over. Fast forward to the present - Izzy has worked hard to get and stay sober. She has been given a second chance and is determined to make a life for herself. She is working at her friend's business Kinnections, a matchmaking agency and loves it.  When Stone's partner William Devine walks in, Izzy can't believe that he is her Liam from years ago. She is reluctant to begin to see him, and he knows she is the one that got away. A great second chance story narrated by Madeleine Maby concluded this series perfectly.

Will of Steele by Diana Palmer (audio) #4
Ted and Jillian's Uncles both left wills that require them to marry in order to keep their ranches. Jillian has been sheltered by her uncle since she was 15, which plays a big part of the story. Ted is a lawman, but does not want to lose his ranch. They are both willing to marry, but Jillian wants to take things slow in order to get to know each other better. Diana has a formula that usually works well, but this one was a bit over-the-top. Corey Snow did a good job with the narration, but just couldn't make the story better for me.

Another slow week for me. A few days after our water disaster I went to visit my Mom and the day after arriving I got sick.  I should have never joined in when other were talking about how they hadn't been sick yet this year.  I am slowly recovering and hope I am at 100% before I have to fly home again Wednesday. When it is difficult to read, you know you are really sick!

The German Girl (audio)

1939 before everything changed, Hannah Rosenthal lived a charmed life. Her family moved in Berlin’s highest social circles, admired by friends and neighbors. Eleven-year-old Hannah was often taken by her mother for an afternoon treat at the tea room of the beautiful Adlon Hotel, both dressed in their finest clothes. She spent her afternoons at the park with her best friend Leo Martin. But, in an instant, that sunlit world vanished. Now the streets of Berlin are draped with red, white, and black flags; their fine possessions are hauled away, and they are no longer welcome in the places that once felt like home. The two friends make a pact: come what may, they promise to have a future together.

As Hannah and Leo’s families desperately begin to search for a means of escape, a glimmer of hope appears when they discover the Saint Louis, a transatlantic liner that can give Jews safe passage to Cuba. After a frantic search to obtain visas, the Rosenthals and the Martins depart from Hamburg on the luxurious passenger liner bound for Havana. Life aboard the ship is a welcome respite from the gloom of Berlin—filled with masquerade balls, dancing, and exquisite meals every night.

As the passengers gain renewed hope for a bright future ahead, love between Hannah and Leo blossoms. But soon reports from the outside world began to filter in, and dark news overshadows the celebratory atmosphere on the ship; the governments of Cuba, the United States, and Canada are denying the passengers of the St. Louis admittance to their countries, forcing them to return to Europe as it descends into the Second World War. The ship that had seemed their salvation seems likely to become their death sentence.

After four days anchored at bay, only a handful of passengers are allowed to disembark onto Cuban soil, and Hannah and Leo must face the grim reality that they could be torn apart. Their future is unknown, and their only choice will have an impact in generations to come.

Decades later in New York City on her eleventh birthday, Anna Rosen receives a mysterious envelope from Hannah, a great-aunt she has never met but who raised her deceased father. In an attempt to piece together her father’s mysterious past, Anna and her mother travel to Havana to meet Hannah, who is turning eighty-seven years old. Hannah reveals old family ties, recounts her journey aboard the Saint Louis and, for the first time, reveals what happened to her father and Leo. Bringing together the pain of the past with the mysteries of the present, Hannah gives young Anna a sense of their shared histories, forever intertwining their lives, honoring those they loved and cruelly lost.

This debut book is wonderfully written, pulls you in and won't let you go as you grit your teeth for Hannah, her family and friends. Hannah and her family escape Germany for Cuba in this historical event that I didn't know much about. Joy Osmanski does a great job with the tension, fear, anger, hope and triumph of the characters. She easily takes us from Hannah's to Anna's POVs. If you liked The Nightingale and All The Light We Cannot See, read this book. .

Ash is not Lord Crosby. He’s a con artist, a noble Spare Heir living off his silver tongue. Now, caught in a web of lies, torn between duty and desire, what’s a con to do but deceive all of London and steal the one lady who dared match wits with the devil himself?

Book two in the Spare Heirs series is very enjoyable.  Evie and Ash are opposites that definitely attract. The scene where Evie breaks free from her mother is classic.  Hoping Victoria and Isabelle get their own story soon.

Hi, everyone! Let’s play a game! Since deception is a key ingredient in THE REBEL HEIR, the second book in the Spare Heirs series, I thought it would be fun to play two truths and a lie. Do you know how this game works?

Ash Claughbane is here to tell you three things about himself and one of them is a lie…Yes, just one. *gives Ash the side eye to keep him honest for a few minutes* Can you guess which fact isn’t true about Ash? Good Luck!

1. I’m from the Isle of Man. There was a time when my family had an estate, a vast home overlooking the sea, servants, gardens... There was a time when my mother and father were alive and that home was intact. There was a time when my three older brothers calling me by my given name of Ashley was my largest problem—there was an unfortunate rhyme that accompanied it, that I won’t repeat here. But that was before Lord Rightworth took everything from us, and I vowed to get it all back. I may be from the Isle of Man, but I haven’t been back there since.

2. I’ve been traveling by carriage with my driver, Stapleton, for company for seven years. I move from town to town, never staying long enough to unpack my trunks. My business has thrived, and rightfully so. I am quite skilled at it. You see, I sell people what they desire, anything they desire. Everyone wants something and it just so happens, I have that something bottled and in my carriage.

I made my way through all of Wales where my brothers were less likely to find me, then I began moving through southern England. That was when he found me, not my eldest brother, the new duke, thankfully, but Fallon St. James. He invited me to join a secret club of title-less gentlemen in London called The Spare Heir Society.

I’m not one to join anything at all. I have no need of any sort of brotherhood having abandoned my own brothers long ago. I told St. James as much and yet he gave me his calling card. Stranger still, I kept it. Now I’m in London, with a room in St. James’ peculiar home and headquarters. My clothing remains in my trunk, but I’m here, newest member of The Spare Heirs Society.

3. My name is Lord Crosby, purveyor of hope for the future. I’m a forward thinking gentleman, a visionary some might say. In a year or two, you’ll remember we met. You’ll remember that I told you that your farming techniques and way of life were a thing of the past. My steam machines will be in every home. Small enough to be accessible to every family, and big enough to make the way all of society lives a little easier. Imagine the possibilities for the good people of England and beyond. The world is changing and the future of our world is steam.

You’ll remember I told you of this. On that day years from now, wouldn’t you like to say you were wise? Wouldn’t you like to say you invested in Crosby Steam Works?

An Excerpt: His heart beat beneath Evangeline’s hand. “Ash, this is dangerous— whatever is happening here…” “I know.” He grinned the wicked grin of a swindler about to steal the prize. “Say that you enjoy it as much as I do, Evie. Admit that you like breaking your rules with me.” “They aren’t my rules,” she said. “Then why follow them?” She swallowed and looked up at him. “I make poor decisions on my own.” “I disagree,” he said, still holding her close. He toyed with the hair that fell over her shoulder. “I haven’t thrown you from my bedchamber. I’m certain that’s a poor decision.” “That’s a matter of opinion,” he said with a grin. “What’s your opinion? What do you want, Evie?” You, her heart screamed, but her mouth refused to form the word. Her gaze dropped back from the depths of his eyes to his lips. He was so close, and yet he only touched her hair and held her hand to his chest. It would be so easy to rise to her toes and show him what she wanted. And yet it wasn’t easy at all. “You think I haven’t noticed that you’ve been staring at my mouth since I arrived?” “I have not…” She began to disagree, but it would have been a lie and he knew it. “Say that you want me to kiss you, Evie.” “I would never…” she began, but fell silent. “Tell me you want me. Say the words and I’ll kiss you.” Evangeline’s lips parted, but she said nothing. “Say, ‘I want your lips on mine, Ash.’ That’s all you have to do. I could show you so many things, Evie. Do you want me to? Say the words.” Her breathing came out harsh as her heart pounded in her chest. How was he making her so unsettled simply with words? “I could bring you so much pleasure, Evie. Do you want me to touch you? To truly touch you? If you asked me, I would fit your breasts into the palms of my hands just like this.” His hand hung in the air over her breast, close enough that she could feel the heat of his skin through her night rail. “Then I would lower my mouth to take your nipple between my teeth, tugging at your polished exterior until the real Evie pulled me closer. I would take your breast into my mouth and with my tongue…” He sighed, dropping his hand away from her. “But you have to tell me you want it.” “Ash,” she whispered, already missing the heat of him close to her skin. “There’s a world out there that you could experience. All you have to do is stop hiding and tell me what you want.” It wasn’t that simple, was it? She opened her mouth, unsure how to speak of her own desires. She never talked that way, not like Ash was able to do. But the truth was, she did want him to kiss her. She wanted everything about this man. That was also the trouble. She couldn’t be trusted to speak— not just now. “I…” He grinned and brushed a strand of hair from her face, placing a kiss on the top of her head as he did. “You’re almost there. Just a few more words. Perhaps you need more encouragement.” “No.” She took two steps backward until her heels bumped the wall. “I- I’m quite…” “Evie, has anyone ever spoken to you this way?” He took slow steps to close the gap between them. “No,” she breathed. “Do you like it when I do?” He grinned down at her as if he could hear all the thoughts she was too afraid to voice aloud. “I think you do. Do you want me to continue?” “Do I have to say that as well?” she asked. “No. I’ve learned in my line of work that it’s sometimes necessary to give someone a taste of what they want before they’ll pay the price.” “Is that what you’re doing to me? Is this a taste of what’s to come?” Heaven help her, she hoped it was. “Only if you want it. That’s my price.” He shifted her hair from her shoulder as he spoke, letting it fall down her back. “That seems…” Whispers of his touch brushed down the side of her neck as he moved her hair. She worked not to lean into his palm and feel the full force of his hand on her skin. “…reasonable.” “I thought so as well.” He shifted even closer to her, leaning his arm on the wall above her head and surrounding her without the benefit of his embrace to steady her. “If you tell me you want me to kiss you, I’ll kiss you here.” He spoke the words against the sensitive skin beneath her ear before moving down her neck, not touching her, but close enough that she could feel the warmth of his lips. She splayed her hands on the wall behind her to keep from tipping sideways. He wasn’t even touching her, and still she struggled to breathe. “I would kiss my way down your neck to just here where I can see your pulse beating rather fast. Is it beating fast because you want me to kiss you, Evie?” he asked against her skin. “You know my terms. Say the words. This is only the beginning…”

Drums of Autumn (audio)

DRUMS OF AUTUMN opens with a hanging. One of Jamie’s old companions from his days in Ardsmuir prison is being hanged for theft, and Jamie has come to lend what support he can. Suddenly the proceedings are disrupted, as another prisoner makes a break for it–and Jamie, moved by the death of his friend, impulsively helps the man, a pirate named Stephen Bonnet, to escape; a decision that will have long-reaching and unforeseen effects.

DRUMS OF AUTUMN is the fourth book in the OUTLANDER series, following VOYAGER. Here Claire and Jamie, with Jamie’s nephew Young Ian, seek to find a place for themselves in the colony of North Carolina, treading a dangerous line between Governor Tryon’s patronage and Claire’s knowledge of the brewing revolution in America, between the help of Jamie’s Aunt Jocasta, last of his MacKenzie kin (“MacKenzies are charming as larks in the field–but sly as foxes with it.”) and the unwanted obligations of her slave-run plantation. As they find mountain land and begin to build their first cabin, their newfound life is bittersweet, with the thought Brianna–the daughter Claire has left behind, the daughter Jamie will never see–always near.

Brianna is thinking of her parents, too. And she’s discovered something dangerous in the historical record; a notice of a fatal fire on Fraser’s Ridge. The time-traveler’s ultimate dilemma raises its head once again: can the past be changed? If it can…what’s the price?

Roger MacKenzie has found the same newspaper notice–and after some soul-searching, has decided not to tell Brianna about it, not wanting her to risk her life for what may be impossible. She doesn’t tell him, either–and his first inkling that she’s found that notice is a shipment of boxes from Brianna, containing her family memorabilia and a note reading, “Everybody needs a history. This is mine. Please look after it ’til I come back.”

Roger follows Brianna into the past, where she has gone on a quest to save her parents’ lives, and upon discovering that she has sailed for America, he takes ship himself…with a Captain Bonnet. (from Diana's website)

Reunited Jamie and Claire travel along with nephew Ian to North Carolina to build a home and life together. Their journey/plan does have it's ups and downs. The story also centers around Brianna and Roger in the present 1968 and again in the past 1767. Their experiences as they travel back in time are exiting, heartbreaking, and frustrating. As it did the first time, the mix up with Roger's identity made me angry. I knew it was coming and still gritted my teeth through those scenes. Loved their reconciliation.  Jamie is able to have and experience life with his child and grandchild instead of hearing about them.  I loved that the most this time around.  So much happens in this chunkster to move these character's lives forward.  Listening to the book narrated by the phenomenal Davina Porter is an experience that enhances the storytelling by leaps and bounds. Can't wait to begin The Fiery Cross.

Will's True Wish + Giveaway

It's a dog's life...

Will Dorning, as an earl's spare, has accepted the thankless duty of managing his rambunctious younger siblings, though Will's only true companions are the dogs he's treasured since boyhood. When aristocratic London is plagued with a series of dognappings, Will's brothers are convinced that he's the only person who can save the stolen canines from an awful fate.

But the lady's choice...

Shy, bookish Lady Susannah Haddonfield has no patience with loud, smelly beasts of any species, but must appear to like dogs so as not to offend her sister's only marital prospect. Susannah turns to Will, an acquaintance from her most awkward adolescent years, to teach her how to impersonate a dog fancier. Will has long admired Susannah, though he lacks the means to offer for her, and yet as they work together to rescue the purloined pets, it's loyal, dashing Will who steals Susannah's heart.

Will has a gift with training dogs.  He tries to train his unruly brothers the same way, and much to his disappointment, it doesn't work as well.  He has come to town to keep an eye on the younger brothers and encourage his older titled brother to find a wife.  Lady Susannah is in town for the express purpose of her sister Della's success in attracting a husband.  When the ladies and a suitor are offended by a dog on a walk, the suitor is put out that Susannah wasn't much help so she turns to childhood acquaintance Will for help.  As they spend time together they both begin to remember how much they liked each other.  Will became her champion during her first season when mean girls were trying to put her out of competition. When the dogs are kidnapped, Susannah is convinced that only Will can find them and claim the reward to help them get a start in their life together.  Absolutely loved Will and his love and loyalty not only to his brothers, but to his dogs as well.  Despite his love for Susannah he was unsure of his ability to care for her in the style she deserves, but is willing to figure it out.  Can't wait for Della and Will's brothers' stories.

The Painter's Daughter

Sophia Dupont assists her father in his studio, keeping her own artwork out of sight. In private, she paints the picturesque north Devon Coast, popular with artists—including handsome Wesley Overtree, who seems more interested in her than the landscape.

Captain Stephen Overtree is accustomed to taking on his brother Wesley's responsibilities. Near the end of his leave, he is sent to find his brother and bring him home. Upon reaching Devonshire, however, Stephen is stunned to learn Wesley has sailed for Italy and left his host's daughter in serious trouble.

Stephen feels duty-bound to act, and strangely protective of the young lady, who seems somehow familiar. Wanting to make some recompense for his own past failings as well as his brother's, Stephen proposes to Miss Dupont. He does not offer love, but marriage "in name only" to save her from scandal. If he dies in battle as he fears, she will at least be a respectable widow.

Sophie makes a very hard decision and knows whatever she decides it will affect her life profoundly.  Both Stephen and Sophie want to honor their decision and each other, rather than be selfish.  In today's world, I find that refreshing and hopeful. The secondary characters with their traits, secrets, and the mystery also  make this such an enjoyable novel.  The author kept me glued to the pages (despite the length) caring for these characters and wanting to find out what happens knowing the prodigal son is going to return.  There was such tension at the end that I was gripping the book so hard wondering if the ending I wanted was going to be delivered.  A great read.

Daniel's True Desire Guest Post w/Grace Burrowes and Giveaway

Daniel Banks is a man of the cloth whose vocation is the last comfort he has left–and even his churchman’s collar is beginning to feel like a noose. In an attempt to start his life over, Daniel accepts the post of vicar in Haddondale, a position supported by the Earl of Bellefonte.

There Daniel meets Lady Kirsten Haddonfield, to whom life has also dealt multiple unkind blows. Daniel’s interest is piqued by Kirsten’s unsentimental attitude toward her misfortunes, and by the kind-heartedness the lady keeps well hidden. Kirsten is much taken with Mr. Banks and his genuine compassion for others, despite his own troubles.

When Providence intervenes, and Daniel and Kirsten can become engaged, their happiness seems complete…. though every garden has at least one nasty, sly, determined serpent.

We met Daniel in David, Lord of Honor's story, Kirsten in Tremaine's True Love, but you do not need to read them to enjoy this one. I was most looking forward to Kirsten's story as she is prickly and unfraid to speak what she thinks. I was surprised that Daniel would be the one to win her heart. However it was immediately clear that they would be perfect for each other, but there are complications. The story of how a HEA could come about lent to most of the suspense and was off set by the lovely "rotten boys"! Another great read from this author that works magic with her words.

“You Might Be A True Gentleman or Gentlewoman If…” by Grace Burrowes

How do you know if your Sig-O is a true gentleman/lady? Ask yourself a few questions…

First, do his or her best moves, smoothest lines, and cleverest flirtations only come out in public, or are the housework sessions equally likely to produce the verbal roses and melting glances from across the laundry pile?

The hallmark of a player is that their repertoire is best displayed when there’s an audience to play to. The true gentleman or lady isn’t playing, so the good stuff can come your way any old day or night of the week.

Second, does he or she deliver the fun and flirtation in you statements (“You look good in anything… and in nothing at all.”) Do they keep to the I-statements when the topic is difficult? (“I can come off irritated any time we talk about money because I’m afraid I’m not pulling my share of the load. I don’t mean to sound that way, and I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings.”)

The guy or gal who lapses into the you-always, and you-never accusations in the middle of a difficult conversation hasn’t learned to fight fair. Time to whip out a few remedial lessons from the relationship Code Duello, or find another waltzing partner.

Third, does he or she have the touch? Always respectful in public—even when respectfully affectionate—always cool with your respectful affections too?

The ladies and gents who treasure us the most know better than to cross that line, and we treasure them right back for their gallant attentions.

Fourth, do they listen to us? We’ve all had the experience of being on a date or in a discussion, and the person we’re with has checked out. They’re eying the door, the clock, their cool new app, or if there’s a mirror on hand (store window, shiny plate, mirror app), themselves. Um… that would be a no.

Fifth, are they honorable? Do they give you the sense that at all times, the person you’re with will be guided by kindness and honesty, even when neither is convenient for them? If that’s the consistent vibe—truth and compassion as their defining values—you are in the company of a true lady or a true gentleman.

Here’s the best part: True ladies and true gentlemen tend to be discerning people, for all they are also gracious, kind, honest, and excellent company. If you’ve found a true lady or gentleman for your very own, and they reciprocate your regard, chances are they have found a true lady or gentleman in you too!

The Duke's Courtship Duology spotlight and giveaway

THE COURTSHIP
The first novella to be published by New York Times bestselling author Grace Burrowes features the foundation story for her bestselling Windham series. This is the tender story of love tested and won, and how Percy Windham, the dashing and brilliant man who was never supposed to become the Duke of Moreland, wooed Esther Himmelfarb, the amazing lady who became his beloved Duchess.

THE DUKE AND HIS DUCHESS
In this second prequel novella to the popular Windham series, Grace Burrowes continues the story of the Duke and Duchess of Moreland through the tumultuous and bittersweet first years of marriage and parenthood. Percival Windham is a second son and cavalry officer when he weds the beautiful Esther Himmelfarb. Percy and Esther must grow into the nobility they've been resisting and stand together, or face the threat of destroying their young family and the beautiful love that started out with such promise...

Message from the Author

My parents recently celebrated their seventieth wedding anniversary—you read that correctly, 7-0. I’m the sixth of their seven children, so I missed a lot of the opening rounds of the Burrowes family story. To make up for that great unfairness, I ask my parents and my older siblings to fill in blanks for me. What was it like for my mom, starting out with twin boys, when the nice obstetrician—who didn’t want to upset her—failed to inform her she was carrying twins?

Mom learned she was to embark on double motherhood in the delivery room, when the nurse said, “Keep pushing, Mrs. Burrowes. You’re still in labor.”

She kept pushing. My brother Dick is particularly grateful she did, too.

What was it like for my father, to be the sole support of nine people, various shirt-tail cousins, and extended family members, on just a professor’s salary?

We never did without the essentials. How did he DOOOOO that?

These stories are the stuff of family legends, and every family has them. When I’d written stories for all of the Windham siblings, I still had a sense that the family tale wasn’t complete. How did Maggie and Devlin join the family? How did Percival, occasionally more stubborn than insightful, have the great sense to marry Esther? Why has Esther remained his champion, conscience, and confidante despite all the trying moments?

To find those answers, I had to write two novellas. First, came “The Courtship”, wherein Their Graces fall madly in love, despite—what a surprise!—meddling parents. Second, came “The Duke and His Duchess”. We know Percy and Esther’s household was in some regards unconventional, but they chose love over appearances from the start of their relationship. I wanted to know how they got through the challenges created by Percy’s behavior prior to the marriage, and emerged a stronger couple and a happier family for their choices.

The Duke’s Courtship duology is the result of my curiosity about the ongoing magic of a loving family, and also a tribute to my parents, whose happily ever after continues, even as a I write this.

EXCERPT:
Miss Esther Himmelfarb has been dragooned into attending a house party to make up the numbers, and to keep an eye on a cousin with a penchant for gambling. Little does Esther know Lord Percival Windham will risk all to win her heart.

“Miss Himmelfarb, I believe?” Lord Percival winged an arm and smiled at Esther graciously. “Shall I have us introduced, or in the informality of the occasion, will you allow me to join you at supper?”
A more calculating man would have offered to escort her to whoever had the honor of dining with her, but then, Lord Percival likely did not have to be calculating.
“I will happily accept your escort to the buffet, my lord.” Esther laced her gloved hand around Lord Percival’s arm, only to encounter a small surprise.
Or not so small.
Gossip had not lied. The man was muscular in the extreme, and this close, he was also of sufficient height to uphold the fiction that he’d protect Esther from any brigands or wolves wandering about Lady Morrisette’s parlor.
“Does your family hail from Kent, Miss Himmelfarb? I know most of the local families and cannot recall Himmelfarbs among them.”
The question was perfectly pleasant, and so too was his lordship’s scent. Not the scent of exertion or the standard rose-scented rice powder—he wasn’t wearing a wig—but something elusive…
“You’re twitching your nose like a thoughtful bunny, Miss Himmelfarb. Are you in anticipation of something particularly succulent among the supper offerings?”
He smiled down at her as he spoke, and for moment, Esther could not fashion a reply. Of all the times for Charlotte Pankhurst to be right about a man’s blue, blue eyes…
“I’m trying to fathom the fragrance you’re wearing, my lord. It’s pleasant.”
“If I didn’t know better, I’d think from your expression that you do not approve of men wearing pleasant scents.” His tone, amused, teasing, suggested that sometimes, all he wore was a pleasant scent—and that just-for-you smile.
Lord Percival leaned nearer, as if sharing a confidence amid the noise and bustle of the first night of a lively, extended social gathering.
“Bay rum lacks imagination, don’t you think? I shall wear it when I’m a settled fellow with children in my nursery. There’s cedar in the scent I wear, reminds me of Canada. You’re partial to spicy scents yourself.”
He was inviting a reciprocal confidence from her with that observation. The notion of trading secrets with Percival Windham made something beneath Esther’s heart twang—disagreeably, of course.
“Lavender with a few other things.”
“My dear”—his lordship had straightened only a bit—“why is My Lady Hair Bows staring daggers in this direction?”
My lady…? Then… my dear?!
“I’m not sure what you mean, my lord.”
“You know exactly what I mean, Miss Himmelfarb.” Lord Percival picked up a plate, though they were still some distance from any sustenance. “Now the Needy girl is at her elbow, pouring brandy on the flames of gossip. You and I will be engaged by this time tomorrow, I don’t doubt.”
Did one correct a duke’s spare when he made light of marriage to a woman within staring distance of professional spinsterhood?
Yes, one did.
“Her name is Needham, my lord. And I should think an engagement unlikely when you have yet to ask for my hand and I have given no indication I would accept your suit.”
The light in his eyes changed, going from friendly—yes, that was the word—to something more intent.
“You are an impertinent woman. We shall get on famously, Miss Himmelfarb. I adore impertinent women.”

Tremaine's True Love + Giveaway

He's had everything he could ever want...until now

Wealthy wool magnate Tremaine St. Michael is half French, half Scottish, and all business. He prowls the world in search of more profits, rarely settling in one place for long. When he meets practical, reserved Lady Nita Haddonfield, he sees an opportunity to mix business with pleasure by making the lady his own.

Nita Haddonfield has a meaningful life tending to others, though nobody is dedicated to caring for Nita. She insists the limitations of marriage aren't for her, then Tremaine St. Michael arrives-protective, passionate, and very, very determined to win Nita's heart.

Once again Ms. Burrowes delivers a story that completely pulls you in and won't let go until the very end. This is the first book in a new series and promises more fun with the upcoming sister's stories. Nita and Tremaine are both pursuing a life that goes against what society things is "right", but neither care. Each of them has no intention of becoming involved, but their future plans are disrupted by each other. Look forward to the next installment in the True Gentlemen series.

Message From the Author

What makes a man a gentleman?

For a romance writer, this question has to be answered in every book, because implicit in the term “hero” is something of the gentleman. Heroes need not be charming, handsome or wealthy, and they might not even be obviously heroic, at least at the start of the book, but they have to be worthy of our loyalty for the duration of an entire book.

In the True Gentlemen series, I took three men who’d wandered across my pages in previous stories—Tremaine St. Michael, Daniel Banks, and Willow Dorning—and found them each a happily ever after. Tremaine is a flinty business man, Daniel is poor and pious, Willow finds polite society an enormous trial and would far rather be with his dogs. These fellows were not obvious choices as romance heroes, but they each had something that tempted me to write stories for them.

When we met Tremaine in an earlier book (Gabriel: Lord of Regrets), Tremaine was convinced that he’d found a good candidate for the position of wife. He offered marriage, listing all the practical advantages to both parties, and he congratulated himself on how much sense his proposed union would make.

The lady turned him down flat, and as a gentleman is bound to do, he graciously ceded the field. He didn’t like it, he didn’t entirely understand how or what he’d lost, but he wished the happy couple well.

Daniel’s role in David: Lord of Honor was to charge to London with sermons at the ready in an attempt to restore his sister’s honor. The very man Daniel accused of wronging that sister had already set her back on the path to respectability.

Oops. But again, being a gentleman, Daniel wishes the couple every happiness, even if doing so costs him the future he’d envisioned for himself and his loved ones. Like Tremaine, he’s a gracious and even dignified loser.

Willow’s appearance in Worth: Lord of Reckoning is brief, but he too is determined to see a sister rescued from a possibly compromising position, and again, rescue is simply not on the heroine’s agenda.

In all three cases, the true gentleman acts in the best interests of those he loves and is responsible for, regardless of the inconvenience or cost to himself. Because Tremaine, Daniel, and Willow were honorable, I liked them. I trusted them, I wanted them to have the happiness they clearly already deserved.

In the Nicholas Haddonfield’s sisters—Nita, Kirsten, and Susannah—I found ladies willing to oblige my ambitions for these men. In each case, our hero has lessons yet to learn, and in each case, his inherent honor wins the day. He might not be handsome, wealthy, or charming in the eyes of the world, but because he’s a true gentleman in the eyes of his lady, he wins her true love.

I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as I enjoyed writing them!

Written In My Own Heart's Blood (audio)

1778: France declares war on Great Britain, the British army leaves Philadelphia, and George Washington’s troops leave Valley Forge in pursuit. At this moment, Jamie Fraser returns from a presumed watery grave to discover that his best friend has married his wife, his illegitimate son has discovered (to his horror) who his father really is, and his beloved nephew, Ian, wants to marry a Quaker. Meanwhile, Jamie’s wife, Claire, and his sister, Jenny, are busy picking up the pieces.

The Frasers can only be thankful that their daughter Brianna and her family are safe in twentieth-century Scotland. Or not. In fact, Brianna is searching for her own son, who was kidnapped by a man determined to learn her family’s secrets. Her husband, Roger, has ventured into the past in search of the missing boy . . . never suspecting that the object of his quest has not left the present. Now, with Roger out of the way, the kidnapper can focus on his true target: Brianna herself.

I recently finished listening to this 8th book of the series on audio. When a new book comes out, I usually read it in print and then listen to it on audio because I am absolutely in love with Davina Porter's narration of these beloved books. MOBY picks up right where Echo in the Bone Left off (which had many people throwing the book across the room). Jamie and Claire are the heart of the story and their enduring love is part of what makes this series so brilliant. Their daughter Brianna (and family)  had to return to the future for the sake of their daughter, but when it is thought that Jem was kidnapped, Roger travels back to the past to find him. Their story is compelling and I am sure will be continued in book 9. Ian, Rachel, Denzel and Dottie finally get married and begin their lives together. Lord John's son William (Jamie's biological son) is a wreck for most of the book, and  I am looking forward to see what is next for him. Jamie and Claire finally returning home to Fraser's Ridge had me in tears! The ending was an OMG moment, and can't wait to get that story!. As I said, Davina Porter is the voice of this series. I can't begin to describe how fantastic she is with this series.  Each book is a commitment, but so well worth the time and effort. Diana's research shines and makes the graphic parts of war, wounds, and medical procedures readable and even enjoyable.

"I have loved others, and I do love many, Sassenach — but you alone hold all my heart, whole in your hands,” he said softly. “  (James to Claire)

Today is this precious one's 1st Birthday.  Cole has brought such joy, laughter and awe to our lives.  We love you little buddy!

Mistress Firebrand

British Occupied Manhattan, 1777. With her witty comedies, American actress Jennifer Leighton has been packing the John Street Theater, but she longs to escape the provincial circuit for the glamour of the London stage. When the playwright General John Burgoyne visits the city, fresh from a recent success on the Continent, she seizes the opportunity to court his patronage. But her plan is foiled by British intelligence officer Severin Devere.

Severin’s mission is to keep the pleasure-loving general focused on the war effort…and away from pretty young actresses. But the tables are turned when Severin himself can’t resist Jennifer Leighton…

Months later, Jenny has abandoned her dreams of stage glory and begun writing seditious plays for the Rebels under the pen name “Cornelia,” ridiculing “Gentleman Johnny” Burgoyne and his army—and undermining the crown’s campaign to take Albany. By the time Severin meets up with Jenny once again, she is on a British hanging list, and Severin is ordered to find her—and deliver her to certain death. Soon, the two are launched on a desperate journey through the wilderness, toward a future shaped by the revolution—and their passion for each other…

Third book in the Renegades of the Revolution series that features women figuring out a way to live, work and survive during the American Revolution. Jennifer is determined to keep her dream alive and figures out a way to do it. Severin is intrigued by her and wants to protect her from the General. He knows her plan will get her nowhere, and does end up rescuing her when the plans go bad. Once Jennifer learns her Aunt Frances secrets, her plans change. Severin is sent to prison and Jennifer will do what it takes to rescue him.   They both become involved in intrigue, adventure, high-stake dangers, but are determined to find their way back to each other. Severin's background made him more of an intriguing character for me and it was easy to root for him.  Loved the historical detail and learned something new.  I hope there will be more books in this series.

Beyond All Dreams

Is bringing the truth to light worth risking all they've ever dreamed for their futures?

Anna O'Brien leads a predictable and quiet life as a map librarian at the illustrious Library of Congress until she stumbles across the baffling mystery of a ship disappeared at sea. Thwarted in her attempts to uncover information, her determination outweighs her shyness and she turns to a dashing congressman for help.

Luke Callahan was one of the nation's most powerful congressmen before his promising career was shadowed in scandal. Eager to share in a new cause and intrigued by the winsome librarian, he joins forces with Anna to solve the mystery of the lost ship. Opposites in every way, Anna and Luke are unexpectedly drawn to each other despite the strict rules forbidding Anna from any romantic entanglements with members of Congress.

From the gilded halls of the Capitol where powerful men shape the future of the nation, to the scholarly archives of the nation's finest library, Anna and Luke are soon embroiled in secrets much bigger and more perilous than they ever imagined. Is bringing the truth to light worth risking all they've ever dreamed for their futures?

It is great when an author tells such a great story that it has me wanting to learn more about the subject of their story. In this case it is the Library of Congress. As a woman Anna has to be careful of her reputation as any impropriety could be the end of her job at the Library of Congress. It has not been too long that women have been allowed to hold such a position with the Library. This is no problem for her as she prefers to stay out of any limelight and keep to herself. She meets Luke when he loses his position on a Committee and is forced into another "lesser" committee. Luke is immediately intrigued by Anna and is more than happy to help her out with her determination to find out what really happened to her father's ship fifteen years ago. They are drawn to each other, but Anna fights it because of her fears.  Both of them have lived through difficult childhoods that are heartbreaking, but instilled in them strong desires for their future. I love how both characters helped each other with their weaknesses and ended up being a great fit.  The secondary characters were just a rich and added another layer to the story.  I recommend this book to those who love historical fiction.

The Captive

Christian Severn, Duke of Mercia, is captured out of uniform by the French, and is thus subject to torture. Christian does not break, not once, and is released when Toulouse falls. Back in England, Christian has great difficulty taking up the reins of his life until Gillian, Countess of Windmere, a relation of his late wife, pointedly reminds him that he has a daughter who still needs him very much—a daughter who no longer speaks. Gilly pushes, pulls, and drags Christian back to life, and slowly, she and he admit an attraction to each other.

Christian offers Gilly marriage, but Gilly is a widow, and has fared badly at the hands of her first husband. Gillian will not pledge her heart to a man bent on violence, for Christian cannot give up his determination to extract revenge from his torturer. What will it take for them to give up their stubborn convictions and choose each other over the bonds of the past?

Book one in the Captive Hearts series gets off to a great start. Grace's writing has renewed my love of historical fiction. It was easy to fall in love with these characters. Both are held captive for many reasons, the actions of others, revenge, fear, bitterness, and the need to be in control. Christian's wounds and motives are easily seen. Gilly's are hidden and Christian has to work at finding them out. Their friendship is mutually beneficial as they both need time to heal and plot their life. There is a danger lurking that unknowingly binds them together further. This danger provides a bit of suspense.

Wicked Wallflower (audio)

Lady Emma Avery has accidentally announced her engagement—to the most eligible man in England. As soon as it’s discovered that Emma has never actually met the infamously attractive Duke of Ashbrooke, she’ll no longer be a wallflower; she’ll be a laughingstock. And then Ashbrooke does something Emma never expected. He plays along with her charade.

A temporary betrothal to the irreproachable Lady Avery could be just the thing to repair Ashbrooke’s tattered reputation. Seducing her is simply a bonus. And then Emma does what he never expected: she refuses his advances. It’s unprecedented. Inconceivable. Quite damnably alluring.

London’s Least Likely to Misbehave has aroused the curiosity—among other things—of London’s most notorious rogue. Now nothing will suffice but to uncover Emma’s wanton side and prove there’s nothing so satisfying as two perfect strangers…being perfectly scandalous together.

Trio of friends: Emma, Olivia and Prudence have suffered through four season and are on the shelf. All three of them are great characters that are invisible for one reason or another. The girls compose a "fun" note to the paper after consuming too much sherry that somehow gets sent and published. It becomes something Emma and Blake decide to use to their advantage, each for different reasons. Their journey to a happy ending was not without its obstacles that made this a fun read. Carolyn Morris narrated.  Looking forward to Olivia and Prudence's stories.

David

David, Viscount Fairly, has imperiled his honor...

Letty Banks is a reluctant courtesan, keeping a terrible secret that brought her, a vicar's daughter, to a life of vice. While becoming madam of Viscount Fairly's high-class brothel is an absolute financial necessity, Letty refuses to become David's mistress-though their attraction becomes harder to resist the more she learns about the man...

Perhaps a fallen woman can redeem it.

David is smitten not only with Letty's beauty, but also with her calm, her kindness, her quiet. David is determined to put respectability back in her grasp, even if that means uncovering the secrets Letty works so hard to keep hidden-secrets that could take her away from him forever...

David, Lord of Honor has featured strongly in previous Lonely Lord boos and his story was anxiously awaited. He is tortured by an event from his past that caused him to give up practicing as a physician. Letty fears her secret past will bring dishonor upon David and his family. Their road to a happy ending is emotional, touching and very well earned.
