Maid Under the Mistletoe + Recipe

‘Tis the season for a sexy holiday!

Single mom Joy Curran needs this temporary holiday housekeeping job working for a reclusive billionaire. But her sexy, aloof boss pulls at Joy's heartstrings—and her long-denied desires—in unexpected ways… Sam Henry never got over the loss of his wife and son, and he's shut himself off from happiness, love—and the holidays. But Joy and her sweet daughter bring laughter into his life. And living with his new maid ignites a passion he can't ignore. After one glorious night in Joy's arms, will this beauty be the Christmas miracle that changes the beast forever?

MAUREEN CHILD is the author of more than 130 romance novels and novellas that routinely appear on bestseller lists and have won numerous awards, including the National Reader's Choice Award. A seven-time nominee for the prestigious RITA award from Romance Writers of America, one of her books was made into a CBS-TV movie called The Soul Collector. Maureen recently moved from California to the mountains of Utah and is trying to get used to snow.

Loved how little Molly melts Sam's frozen heart. I found myself laughing out loud a few times while enjoying this book. If you are looking for a quick, sweet Christmas story, this fits the bill perfectly.  The recipe Maureen shares is one of my favorites for the holiday season.

Bon Appétit and a Book:
A delicious recipe to enjoy alongside the book

SNOWBALL COOKIES
·         1 cup butter
·         1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
·         1/4 teaspoon salt
·         1 teaspoon vanilla extract
·         2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
·         1 cup chopped pecans
·         1/3 cup confectioners' sugar for dusting, or as needed
·         1/4 cup finely crushed peppermint candy canes (optional)
·
Directions

1.      Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2.      Cream the butter with 1/2 cup of the confectioners' sugar and the vanilla. Mix in the flour, pecans, and salt. Roll about 1 tablespoon or so of dough into balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet.

3.      Bake in preheated oven until bottoms are golden, about 15 minutes. Do not allow these cookies to get too brown: it's better to under cook them than to overcook them. While cookies are still hot, roll them in confectioners' sugar. Once they have cooled, roll them in confectioners' sugar once more.

A Bravo For Christmas + Recipe

‘Tis the season for a sexy holiday!
When Darius Bravo wants something—he usually gets it. And the powerhouse CEO has wanted Ava Malloy since he was a Justice Creek High senior. Darius is already adored by one Malloy: Ava's spirited daughter. Helping Sylvie and her local Blueberry troop build dollhouses for needy kids is a worthy cause that's bringing him closer to the widowed single mom. Imagine his surprise when the usually unapproachable Ava starts flirting and making her romantic intentions crystal clear!

With one condition.  A holiday fling with the man Ava has always found irresistibly attractive is a thrilling way to ring in the New Year. She can't promise Darius the future—one devastating heartbreak in a lifetime is enough. But Ava underestimates his staying power. And what about her own secret heart's desire? A Bravo under the mistletoe and in her arms forever!

CHRISTINE RIMMER is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author who has written more than 100 contemporary romances for Harlequin Books. A reader favorite, Rimmer has won Romantic Times Book Review's Reviewer's Choice Award for best Silhouette Special Edition. She has been nominated seven times for the Romance Writers of America's prestigious RITA award and five times for Romantic Times Series Storyteller of the Year.

This was a delightful Christmas read. Ava and Darius have known each other since high school. Due to Ava's upbringing she set early goals for what she wanted out of life, so she steered clear of popular, handsome Darius.  Now years later in her loneliness, she makes a deal with Darius for a fling. Darius accepts her terms to begin with and sets out to win her heart.  Despite this being a 6th book in a series, I was able to follow along and fall in love with these characters.

Bon Appétit and a Book: A delicious recipe to enjoy alongside the book

CHICKEN SOUP FOR CHRISTMAS

There’s nothing like a bowl of chicken soup on a cold winter’s day.  Enjoy it in front of the tree, or by a cozy fire.  Add a great Christmas romance—I recommend my December release, A BRAVO FOR CHRISTMAS--and there’s nothing better. I love this chicken soup recipe.  It essentially takes two days because you have to make the broth first and then cool it to skim off the fat.  But it really is a simple process.  And it is soooo good.    --Christine Rimmer ,

2 Tbsp olive oil
2 medium onions, chopped
4 medium carrots sliced into quarter-inch rounds
3 celery stalks, CUT into quarter-inch slices
1 (5 ½ to 7-pound) chicken
2 quarts chicken broth
Up to 1 quart cold water
1 bay leaf
4 sprigs fresh thyme or ½ tsp dried thyme
5 sprigs fresh parsley
Salt and pepper to taste
2 cups egg noodles
Chopped fresh parsley for garnish
Cut the chicken into 8 pieces. (Yes, you can buy an already cut-up chicken.  Just be sure it still has bones and skin and don’t cut off any extra fat.  The fat adds flavor and then you skim it away later.)  And of course, always be careful to wash hands, cutting tools and surfaces thoroughly after handling poultry.
Heat the oil over medium heat in a stockpot.  Add onions, carrots and celery.  Cook, stirring often, until soft, approximately 10 minutes.
Add the chicken pieces to the sautéed veggies and pour in the broth.  Add enough cold water to cover veggies and chicken by about 2 inches.  Bring to a boil over high heat and skim off the foam that rises to the surface.  Add the parsley, thyme and bay leaf (You will remove these later, so if you tie them together or bag them in culinary cheesecloth, removal is easier).
Reduce heat to low and simmer until the chicken is very tender, about 2 hours.  (I put the lid on for this.  My mother always simmered the soup uncovered.  Your choice).
Remove the chicken from the pot and set aside until cool enough to handle.  Remove and discard parsley, bay leaf and thyme.  Degrease the soup.  (If you don’t mind skimming it hot, that’s fine—or if you have one of those fat-separating cups, even better.  I like to chill the broth and the chicken overnight and then put the broth in the freezer for a few hours the next morning.  The fat is thick and floating by then and easy to spoon off.)
Discard the chicken skin and bones and cut the meat into bite-sized pieces.  Add the noodles and cook according to instructions on the noodle package (3-10 minutes).  Stir the chicken back into the soup, add salt and pepper to taste, serve hot.

The soup will be good refrigerated for four days or so.  You can freeze it for up to three months.  Makes 12-15 servings.

An Amish Noel and Holiday Bon Appéti

Luke Bowman's homecoming is turning Emma Swartzentruber's carefully ordered world upside down. Gone is her rebellious girlhood crush, and in his place is a handsome man who seems committed to serving the community. Luke's even agreed to work for Emma's ill father, whose last wish is to see his daughter wedded to a stable, loving man.

But Luke—a man who flirted with the outside world with disastrous consequences—is hardly marriage material for a good Amish woman. Yet this Christmas, when her family is flung into crisis, Emma finds that he may just be the one to capture her heart for good.

When Luke left his community life did not go well for him, he made some bad decisions and ended up in prison. He has returned home to serve out his patrol. He is sorry for breaking Emma's heart when he left, but she wants nothing to do with Luke. Luke is attracted to her, but doesn't know if he will stay and doesn't want to cause her any more hurt. He helps her dad get his store ready to open so Emma cannot avoid him. As she contemplates being courted by a widow with a young daughter, she can't get Luke out of her mind and wonders what it means.  Emma's younger brother makes a poor decision and Luke is either to blame or the only that can help.  A quick, clean holiday story.

Merry Christmas from me, Patricia Davids. If you love pecans the way I do, you'll want to enjoy this delicious holiday recipe all year round. They are called Kentucky Pecan Bars and they are YUM. Pair them with a cup of hot peppermint cocoa and you'll have a real treat to savor while you enjoy my latest book, An Amish Noel.

Ingredients
Crust:
Nonstick cooking spray
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
12 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small dice
3 to 4 tablespoons ice water

Filling:
1 2/3 cups pecans
6 ounces white chocolate, chopped
1 cup honey
2/3 cup packed light brown sugar
3 large eggs
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons bourbon
Zest of 1 orange
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:
For the crust: Adjust the oven rack to the bottom position and preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Coat the bottom and sides of a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with cooking spray.
In a food processor, pulse together the flour, sugar, salt and butter until the butter is pea-sized. Add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, and pulse until the dough begins to pull from the sides of the bowl. Transfer the dough to a floured surface, gather together and pat into a rectangle. Roll the dough into a 1/8-inch-thick rectangle that measures about 13 by 15 inches. Trim the rough edges and ease the dough into the prepared pan, pressing it onto the bottom and about halfway up the sides (trim the dough more on the sides as needed). Prick the dough a couple times with a fork. Cover with aluminum foil and fill with pie weights or dried beans. Bake until the dough starts to set up, about 15 minutes. Remove the weights and foil and continue to bake until the crust is just golden, about 5 minutes more. Let it cool completely.

For the filling: Meanwhile, lower the oven temperature to 350 degrees F and spread the pecans out on a baking sheet. Bake until toasted and lightly browned, 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool and then coarsely chop.
Bring a couple of inches of water to a simmer in a small saucepan. Put the white chocolate in a heat-safe bowl that sits comfortably in the saucepan without touching the water. Stir occasionally until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Spread it evenly on the crust and let it set up. Beat the honey and brown sugar with an electric mixer until smooth. Beat in the eggs. Pour in the melted butter and continue to beat. Add the flour, bourbon, orange zest and vanilla. Sprinkle the pecans over the white chocolate and pour in the honey mixture.

Bake until the top of the filling is golden brown and the center sets up, 30 to 40 minutes. Cover and put in the refrigerator until cool. When ready to serve, cut into 36 even bars.

After her daughter left home, Pat's love of reading evolved into a serious desire to write. In 1996, she began work on her first novel. It proved to be more difficult than she expected. In researching how to write, she discovered a local writers group and soon joined both the Wichita Area Romance Authors and the national organization, Romance Writers of America. Pat credits the help of the wonderful members of both organizations with teaching her the craft of writing and giving her insight into the publishing industry.

Still, after seven years of writing and three completed manuscripts, all she had to show for her efforts was a pile of rejection letters. Then, in the summer of 2002, Pat met Deborah Raney, a fellow Kansas author, and learned about the growing inspirational romance market. It was a light bulb over the head moment. Pat revised her third book for yet another time and the rest is history.

I write in a corner of my bedroom these days. My daughter and her two children recently moved in with me following her divorce. My office became my granddaughter's bedroom. That's okay. People are more important than things. I don't have as much space now, but I have everything I need on my desk. I have my favorite print in front of me. It inspires me to keep moving forward. I have mementos of my travels and trinkets from friends and family and my research books. It's a place where I can shut the door and work.

Holiday Bon Appétit

Luxurious Hot Chocolate
4 cups of milk (whole is best)
8 ounces of high-quality chocolate … I like Guittard semisweet chips. White chocolate works too, for a different taste.
3 teaspoons of powdered sugar
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (pure, not imitation)
1/8 teaspoon salt

Finely chop the chocolate. Even if using chocolate chips, the smaller the pieces, the better it will dissolve in liquid. On low heat in a medium saucepan, bring the milk to a low boil, whisking occasionally to keep from scorching. Add the vanilla, powdered sugar, salt and chocolate and whisk vigorously until the chocolate has melted. Heat for another 4 minutes, constantly stirring. Serve with a dollop of real whipped cream. You can add lots of things to this recipe: Mint, vanilla bean, cinnamon stick. Whatever your preference. Just add herbs or spices to the milk while simmering. After it boils, remove from heat and let the milk steep for 10 minutes then strain off your add-ins and return to simmer before adding the chocolate and other ingredients.

RaeAnne's Writing Space:

I love my office! I wrote my first 15 books in a corner of a dining room, usually with kids running around me. Eventually, we moved to a new house where I actually had an office, which was wonderful – but it was in the basement, with only a view of a window well. A year ago, I was able to move my office to this spot that has huge windows with a beautiful view of my northern Utah mountains (though I have to look past the neighboring houses!). It’s been perfect. I love writing in front of the fireplace – and I keep the Christmas tree up until spring, since I’m writing Christmas books for several months out of the year and it helps keep me in the mood.

Love Lessons Learned: Real life romance lessons learned from the book.
Love can heal even the deepest wounds.
Love can often be found in the most unexpected places.

Movie Star Cast: The author picks movie stars to play the characters in a movie.
Celeste – Michelle Trachtenberg
Flynn – Henry Cavill

Also included with this book:

Christmas In Cold Creek (#9)
Becca came to Pine Gluch after inheriting her Uncle's house.  This was a perfect place for her to get a new start with her younger sister after their mother left Gabi with her.  However, she is keeping a secret that Chief Trace can sense.  He is intrigued by Becca and can't stop helping her out even when she pushes him away.  When Becca and Gabi's mom shows up her secrets are revealed and she hopes she can count on Trace to help.

Holiday Bon Appétit and a Book: Her Mistletoe Cowboy

Second Chance Ranch with First-Rate Cowboy

Kimberly Lee isn't sure what she'll find when she comes to Forever, Texas, to do a story on a groundbreaking program that could put this small town on the map. It certainly isn't the warm, friendly community that makes the roving reporter feel instantly at home. Or the accident that lays her up at Garrett White Eagle's ranch, where the blue-eyed rancher awakens feelings she long ago gave up.

Giving people hope again is the goal of the healing ranch Garrett started with his brother. And the lovely, hardworking writer is no exception. Doesn't Kim realize how much good they can do—together? Her future is here with him. If she's willing to trust in a love that could fulfill the promise of forever.

My thoughts:
Kimberly Lee is assigned a story about Healing Ranch.  She leaves the big city of San Francisco and heads to Forever, Texas.  Garrett White-Eagle is excited about the story and hope it helps get the word out about the good work they do with trouble teen aged boys.  He is not so sure when Kim shows up with her skeptical attitude, but is determined to win her over.  This was a short, enjoyable book in a long running series.  I have not read any of the other books and felt a bit lost with many of the characters.

I think Christmas and everyone I know thinks of my mint chip brownies and my marzipan bundt cake. The brownies are more or less a standard recipe, except doubled (so the brownies are nice and thick) and add in lots of mint chips. Here’s the marzipan cake:

Marzipan Cake

INGREDIENTS:
1 (18.25 ounce) package moist white (or yellow) cake mix
1 (5 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
¾ cup of vegetable oil
¾ cup of Amaretto
4 eggs
½ cup of almond slivers
1 tube of almond paste (marzipan)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 10 inch bundt pan with Pam (with flour)

2. Cut almond paste into approximately 14 slices, then put into blender (or something that resembles coffee bean grinder). Object is to break up the slices into tiny pieces to distribute the flavor throughout the cake.

3. In medium bowl combine all the above ingredients then beat with an electric mixer for 5 minutes.

4. Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes (insert knife in center, cake is done when knife comes out clean) Let cake cool in pan for 10 minutes, then invert and remove cake from pan (with luck!). Let cake cool completely, then drizzle with powder sugar.

5. Enjoy.

Accidents of Marriage

For Madeline Illica, the love of her husband Ben was her greatest blessing and biggest curse. Brilliant, handsome and charming Ben could turn into a raging bull when crossed—and despite her training as a social worker Maddy was never sure what would cross him. When Ben was in a conciliatory mood they worked on techniques for communication and anger management but on the day of the accident, nothing seemed to help. He was furious at having to drive Maddy to work, the road was wet, and that SUV was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Ben never meant for them to go off the road or for Maddy to go flying through the windshield.

Now she’s on a ventilator in intensive care and no one knows if she’ll reawaken from her coma and, if she does, whether she’ll ever be her old self. Maddy’s family blames Ben. Maddy’s friends blame Ben. The children blame Ben. Ben blames Ben—and he is sick to the pit of his soul over the fear of losing his one true love. Fourteen-year-old Emma sees things a little differently. She desperately misses her mother but misses being a teenager more as she’s forced to pick up the slack from Ben and parent her younger siblings Gracie and Caleb. On the cusp of coming of age, she needs Maddy so she can discuss the hard decisions she’s being forced to make. And her confrontations with her volatile father are growing more heated by the day.

This book grabs you from the first sentences and doesn't let you go even though your emotions are put through the wringer! I like when an author can get me so involved with the characters that I want to reach into the book. The subject matter of emotional abuse through uncontrolled anger is raw, honest and heartbreaking in it's far reaching results. TBI (traumatic brain injury) touched my family 5 years ago, it was devastating, and thankfully recovery was possible. This part of the novel was spot on and it feels like you are right there with Maddy. The novel ends in a realistic way and the characters will stay with you.

No Limits

Cannon Colter is quintessential hero material: chiseled jawline, shredded body—the works. He’s also the guy who rescued Yvette Sweeny from kidnappers, only to put an end to her romantic dreams. These days, she’s older, smarter, determined to face whatever life throws her way. Even the prospect of sharing a house and business with Cannon.

Cannon knew Yvette wanted him three years ago. But she was young—and some things are worth waiting for. Thrown together by her grandfather’s legacy, he realizes how deep Yvette’s scars really go and how much danger lurks in their quiet town. As pent-up desire explodes between them, protecting her becomes the only fight that matters. And he’ll break all the rules to do it….

Book one in the new Ultimate series. Cannon made an appearance in a previous book and I was looking forward to his story. I was a bit intimidated by the MMA subject matter, but it was for nothing. I admired Yvette'd determination not to live as a victim despite how other perceived her.  She returns to her hometown to make a new life and is surprised that Cannon wants to stay and help her. With a plan in place, Austin, Hunter and Alex are ready for anything—until three very different women enter their lives, making them question their motives for revenge.

Each book is connected by the desire to bring Jason Treffen to justice for his role in the death of Sarah Michaels and his involvement in  preying on young women in dire financial straights.  In each book the characters are wounded and hurting for what they feel is their part in the loss of Sarah, the gals want revenge. In the first book Justin and Katy had great chemistry and their plan was . In the second book Hunter and Eve didn't have as much chemistry, but I did like Hunter's transformation.  In the third book Alex and Chelsea had great chemistry and I liked their journey from secretly wounded individuals to taking the steps to heal together.  And of course, we felt the satisfaction that Jason deed were uncovered!  A fun, easy, entertaining trilogy.

When We Met by Susan Mallery (review and giveaway)

Angel Whittaker earned his scars the hard way, but the scars that can't be seen are the ones that haunt him the most. Since he moved to Fool's Gold, California, he's cobbled together a life for himself as a bodyguard trainer. If he's not exactly happy, at least his heart is safe.

Working with pro-football superstars taught tough-talking PR woman Taryn Crawford one thing—she can go toe-to-toe with any man. But then dark, dangerous former Special Ops Angel targets her for seduction…and challenges her to resist his tempting kisses.

Even in four-inch heels, Taryn never backs down. Unless, somehow, Angel can convince her that surrender might feel even better than victory.

It is always a joy to return to Fool's Gold and all its wonderful characters.  We met both of these characters in previous books, and I looked forward to their stories.  Both characters have wounded/tragic pasts and how they cope with them will make it hard to open their hearts.   I loved it that Angel volunteered with a community organization and much to his surprise he was assigned to a group of six year old girls!   Taryn agreed to help him with the girls if he helped her get ready for a camping trip with clients. Fun, hilarious and totally enjoyable.

Getting Rowdy

Charismatic bar owner Rowdy Yates isn’t the kind of man women say no to. So when he approaches waitress Avery Mullins, he fully expects to get her number. However, the elusive beauty has her reasons for keeping her distance— including a past that might come back to haunt them both.

Avery spends her nights working for tips…and trying to forget the secret Rowdy is determined to unearth. But when history threatens to repeat itself, Avery grows to rely on Rowdy’s protective presence. As the sparks between them ignite, she will be forced to choose between the security she’s finally found…and the passion she’s always wanted.

This is the third book in the Love Undercover series. It stands alone well, but after meeting Pepper, Logan, Reese and Alice, I want to go back and read books 1 and 2. Rowdy is a teddy bear under his tough, bad-boy exterior. Avery sees underneath the tough as nails ladies man and is determined not to be one of his conquests.  His change is a blast to read. The action and suspense is fast paced and attention holding.  I will definitely be reading more of Lori's books .
