Thoughts on a few of the books I read last month:

Darius by J.R. Ward (audio) #0.5

What a great prequel to the Black Dagger Brotherhood narrated by Jim Frangione. The story of how it all began as well as the story of Beth's parents Darius and Ann. Knowing how the story would end was still hard and emotional.
*Thanks to Simon and Schuster Audio for this review copy*

A Hard Day For A Hangover by Darynda Jones.

Yesterday was a rough one for Sheriff Sunshine Vicram, but the day gets off with a bang despite her hangover. A young girl is found on the side of the road, another girl is missing, a prisoner that Sun had transferred has escaped and her daughter Auri is testing her patience. What else could go wrong? Oh yeah, she has a secret that could get her and her daughter killed. Fast paced, funny with quirky characters made this such a delightful installment in this series.

The Sunshine Girls by Molly Fader

Sisters Abbie and Clara are saying goodbye to their mother BettyKay when a celebrity walks in and places pink buttons in their mother's coffin.  Kitty Deveraux has been a star since the late 60's.  When the girls get over their shock they approach her to ask what she's doing.  Kitty and BettyKay's story takes them back to their early days meeting at nursing school through to the present and the girls learn they knew nothing about their mother and are at a loss. Will this draw them farther apart or forge a new future? The past and present meld together to tell the story of friendship, family and forgiveness.
*Thanks to HTP/Graydon House/NetGalley for this review copy*

Heartbreaker by Sarah MacLean (audio) #2

Adelaide has found a life with the Hells Bells, a group of women who right wrongs of powerful men mostly in secret. She is a master of the sleight of hand and is masquerades as The Match Breaker.  The girls mission is to save a young woman from her father who has taken matters into her own hands by eloping. Henry, the Duke of Clayborn, is the brother of the young man and is just as determined to find them when he and Adelaide cross paths.  They are known to each other and reluctantly team up with differing agendas.  Plenty of action and banter that takes these characters on a fast paced journey to a destination neither expected.  Brilliantly narrated by Mary Jane Wells.

Four Weeks of Scandal by Megan Frampton (audio)

Did Octavia's gambler father lose her inheritance (childhood home) to the father of Gabriel, who now claims it as his? They have four weeks to find out as they search the home for the proof each of them needs. Octavia to save her business and Gabriel to finally have something of his own. As they search against each other, they work together to fix up the house and find themselves drawn to each other. Will their goals get in between what is happening or will they make a different bargain. This funny, heartwarming story is narrated by the talented Justine Eyre.

Mercy by David Baldacci
Scandal Wears Satin by Loretta Chase (audio)

The Harbor by Katrine Engberg (audio)
The Hidden One by Linda Castillo
The Match by Harlan Coben
The Sweetest Thing by Sasha Summers
When She Dreams by Amanda Quick

Thoughts on a few of the books I read last month:

The Sweetest Thing by Sasha Summers

A wonderful, sweet second chance at love story that centers around two bee keeping family's trying to save their farms/homes.  Both Tansy and Dane need to win the annual Honey Bee Festival to help with their respective goals. The bonus novella about Tansy's Aunt Camellia was just as sweet.
*Thanks to HQN Books/NetGalley for this review copy*

Somewhere I'll Find You by Lisa Kleypas (audio) #1

Julia and Damon were married as young children by their fathers.  This has been ignored by Damon for years, Julia has had a problem with it since coming of age.  She disappears and pursues a career as an actress.  For the last three years Damon has been looking for Julia to annul the marriage as he wants to be free to marry for love.  As a person who may be enticed to support the Capitol Theater, Julia is encouraged to have dinner with him.  She knows immediately who is he and keeps it from him, but is intrigued by him.  When he finds out who she is things get interesting.  A bit over the top and improbable story, narrated by a Rosalyn Landor.  Not a favorite from this author.
*Thanks to HarperAudio for this review copy*

The Harbor by Katrine Engberg (audio) #3

Jeppe and Anette are assigned a case of a missing fifteen year old Oscar.  As they begin to investigate the reason for his being missing is not clear, kidnapping or something else?  When the body of Oscar's teacher is found at the incineration plant they both know there is more going on here than first thought.  The parents are not forthcoming and others seem to have something to hide. This twisty, atmospheric story narrated by Graeme  Malcolm keeps you guessing. Another great installment in this series by popular Denmark author.
*Thanks to Simon and Schuster Audio for this review copy*

The Hidden One by Linda Castillo #14

Police Chief Kate Burkholder gets a visit from Amish elders/bishop from Pennsylvania informing her that her childhood friend Jonas has been arrested for murder and asking for her help.  She goes with the intention of seeing if she can help him as she feels she is the reason her family was asked to leave their community.  The back story of Jonas and Kate is just as interesting as her investigation into this 18 year old murder.  The local police are not helpful and someone wants to keep long held secrets buried.  Katie is determined to get to the truth and doggedly pursues it in this heart-pounding whodunit. A great installment in this favorite series.
*Thanks to Minotaur Books/NetGalley for this review copy*

Highland Wolf by Lynsay Sands (audio) #10

Claray is contemplating jumping for the keep window to avoid a marriage her uncle is forcing upon her.  She is a lover of animals and wounded ones seem to find her for tending.  On the way to the Chapel she is rescued/kidnapped by the notorious Wolf.  Being this was an answer to prayer she is not afraid.  Wolf/Conall/Bryce has been sent by her father to bring her home.  Conall has a secret that he knows Claray will need to know soon in order to protect her.  On the journey to her home and then to his childhood home they get to know each other.  Plenty of laugh-out-loud moments with action and adventure as there are still people who want to take their lives. William Macleod does a fantastic job narrating.

Thoughts on a few of the books I read last month:

Lost and Found Family by Jennifer Ryan (audio)

DNF - I did enjoy the narration of Terri Schnaubelt, but did not want to continue with the negative energy (anger of the MIL) of this book. I am sure all turns around right as the misunderstanding comes to light and she finds out she was totally wrong.
*Thanks to HarperAudio for this review copy*

A Scott to the Heart by Caroline Linden #2 (audio)

Andrew and Ilsa meet at an evening out with friends.  Both find themselves attracted to each other. Shortly after meeting their lives drastically change. The scandal gest too tangled and distracts from their relationship. Overall an enjoyable listen as Beverly A. Crick does an excellent job of narrating.

Last Duke Standing by Julia London #1

Little do they know the matchmaker sees their chemistry and begins to introduce her to duds.  A great start to a new series with interesting secondary characters.

Down Range by Taylor Moore
Prodigal Son by Greg Hurtwitz
The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf
The Reading List by Sarah Nisha Adams (audio)
Wicked All Night by Jeanne Frost

Thoughts on a few of the books I read last month:

The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf

Wylie is trying to finish her true crime story despite some personal life issues.  She rents a home in the woods, and of course, there is a snow storm brewing. The story is told in 3 POVs that go back and forth between then and now.  The back story is riveting and sets the tension and pace as past and present collide.  That collision was a bit too convenient, but overall was a good read.
*Thanks to Harlequin Trade Pub/Park Row/NetGalley for this review copy*

Cry Wolf by Hans Rosenfeldt

What does a drug deal gone bad and a dead wolf have in common?  Are they linked? Hannah a veteran police woman is determined to work her hardest to solve the mystery. She is having a crisis of being in a certain season of life with a distant husband. There are plenty of characters introduced that at times are had to keep track of, but the effort pays off in the end.

*Thanks to Harlequin Trade Pub/Hanover Press/NetGalley for this review copy*

Beach Wedding by Michael Ledwidge

The Rourke gathers at an exclusive Southampton home for the wedding of their oldest brother Tom. Terry is reluctant to return home as there are not good memories attached.  When he was a teenager his dad lost a huge murder case that sent him spiraling and effected their entire family. While enjoying the amenities of the mansion Terry stumbles upon one of his favorite author's files of his investigation into the murder.  He discovers that a book was planned.  As Terry, a Philly cop, digs into the material he discovers things he didn't know and is off on a chase of finding out what really happened. Plenty of twists and turns happen as he digs and others try to keep the truth buried.

The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams

This wonderful debut novel has two unlikely people find each other in the library, and end up connecting through a reading list.  Mukesh is struggling with the loss of his wife, and wants to forge a way back to his daughters and granddaughter.  Aleisha has taken a job at the local library and means to do something as well as get her out of the house away from her Mom.  Both are not readers but those in their lives are and they find encouragement to read. As the story progresses we are treated to their lives and how the books they read effect them.  Brilliantly narrated by Tara Divina, Sagar Arya and Paul Panting.  Highly recommend this book/audio.
