The Friendship List

Already a worldwide success in mass market and trade paperback formats, Susan Mallery’s newest hardcover is an emotional, witty, and heartfelt story about two best friends who are determined to help one another shake things up and live life to the fullest...only to discover that possibilities are everywhere--especially in the most unexpected of places.

Ellen and Unity have been best friends basically since birth, but they couldn’t be more different. Unity married her childhood sweetheart just after high school and became an Army wife, moving from base to base…until her husband's shocking death in the line of duty leaves her a widow. Grief-stricken, it’s time for Unity to come back home to Ellen—the only person she can trust to help her rebuild her life. But Ellen has troubles of her own. Boys never seemed to notice Ellen…until one got her pregnant in high school and disappeared. Her son is now 17 and she’s wondering what to do with herself now that he’s heading off to college and he's literally her entire world.

But now that Ellen and Unity are reunited, they’re done with their stale lives. It’s time to shake things up and start living again, knowing that they'll always have one another to lean on. So they create a list of challenges they have to accomplish--everything from getting a tattoo to skydiving to staying out all night. And whoever completes the most challenges is the winner. But with new adventures and love just around the corner, there’s no such thing as losing…

This book was easy to devour over a couple of days. The lives of these two friends quickly draws you in to root for them to find themselves as they navigate a new path in life. When they make a list to help each other take these steps forward hilarious and heartwarming things happen.

Holiday Reads

CHRISTMAS FROM THE HEART by Sheila Roberts

USA TODAY bestselling author Sheila Roberts takes readers to the charming, snowbound town of Pine River in this irresistible holiday romance.
Sometimes you need to look beyond the big picture to see what really matters
Olivia Berg’s charity, Christmas from the Heart, has helped generations of families in need in Pine River, Washington, but this year might be the end of the road. Hightower Enterprises, one of their biggest donors since way back when Olivia’s grandmother ran the charity, has been taken over by Ebenezer Scrooge the Second, aka CFO Guy Hightower, and he’s declared there will be no more money coming to Christmas from the Heart.

Guy is simply being practical. Hightower Enterprises needs to tighten its belt, and when you don’t have money to spare, you don’t have money to share. You’d think even the pushy Olivia Berg could understand that.

With charitable donations dwindling, Olivia’s Christmas budget depends on Hightower’s contribution. She’s focused her whole life on helping this small town, even putting her love life on hold to support her mission.

When Guy’s Maserati breaks down at the edge of the Cascade foothills, he’s relieved to be rescued by a pretty young woman who drives him to the nearby town of Pine River. Until he realizes his rescuer is none other than Olivia Berg. What’s a Scrooge to do? Plug his nose and eat fruitcake and hope she doesn’t learn his true identity before he can get out of town. What could go wrong?

Olivia runs a long time non-profit that helps those in need at Christmas time. When she finds out that a regular donor is not contributing, she endeavors to find out why.  Guy denies the request because his company is experiencing some difficulties. On his way to visit with his mom his car breaks down in a small town.  He has to spend a day there waiting for a part and the only place he is offered to stay is at, you guessed it, Olivia's house.  When he realizes who has come to his aid he doesn't tell her is real name.   They begin to hit it off. Guy knows she will toss him aside when his identity is revealed.  Will she forgive him in the spirit of Christmas or make a big mistake and settle.  A heart warming holiday story.

COMING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS BY RaeAnne Thayne

Elizabeth Hamilton has been lost. Trapped in a tangle of postpartum depression and grief after the death of her beloved parents, she couldn’t quite see the way back to her husband and their two beautiful kids…until a car accident stole away her memories and changed her life. And when she finally remembered the sound of little Cassie’s laugh, the baby powder smell of Bridger and the feel of her husband’s hand in hers, Elizabeth worried that they’d moved on without her. That she’d missed too much. That perhaps she wasn’t the right mother for her kids or wife for Luke, no matter how much she loved them.

But now, seven years later, Luke finds her in a nearby town and brings Elizabeth back home to the family she loves, just in time for Christmas. And being reunited with Luke and her children is better than anything Elizabeth could have imagined. As they all trim the tree and bake cookies, making new holiday memories, Elizabeth and Luke are drawn ever closer. Can the hurt of the past seven years be healed over the course of one Christmas season and bring the Hamiltons the gift of a new beginning?

Luke's wife has been missing for seven years.  The new DA has decided to charge him with her death.  Luke has know for awhile where his wife has been, and now has to bring her back to clear his name.  He doesn't know what happened to Elizabeth or why she has been living under a different name, and he doesn't care.  He wants his named cleared and divorce finalized.  Elizabeth agrees to return to help hoping she can begin to repair her relationship with her kids.  What happened to Elizabeth was awful, but it was a bit over the top, and hard to understand once she got help why she didn't reach out.  Luke's anger was understandable, but he did make an effort to understand once he learned what happened.  Just okay for me.

On Second Thought

Ainsley O'Leary is so ready to get married—she's even found the engagement ring her boyfriend has stashed away. What she doesn't anticipate is for Eric to blindside her with a tactless breakup he chronicles in a blog…which (of course) goes viral. Devastated and humiliated, Ainsley turns to her half sister, Kate, who's already struggling after the sudden loss of her new husband.

Kate has always been so poised, so self-assured, but Nathan's death shatters everything she thought she knew—including her husband—and sometimes the people who step up aren't the ones you expect. With seven years and a murky blended-family dynamic between them, Ainsley and Kate have never been overly close, but their shared sorrow dovetails their faltering worlds into one.

Despite the lifetime of history between them, the sisters must learn to put their differences aside and open their hearts to the inevitable imperfection of family—and the possibility of one day finding love again.

I loved this story of sisters, both dealing with devastation in their personal lives.  Kate did not hesitate to have Ainsley move in with her after getting dumped by her boyfriend Ainsley is sure that Eric will get whatever he is going through out of his system and come back to her.  As she waits she discovers who she really wants to be and more about her family than she ever expected.  Kate struggles with being a widow after such a short marriage, wondering how and when to move on being sensitive to her husband's family. As these two sisters walk through what has happened there are tears, laughter, surprises and reconciliation.  This thoroughly satisfying story was told in the alternating voices of Kate and Ainsley.  Another gem from a favorite author.

Switchback by Catherine Anderson and Giveaway

A KIDNAPPED CHILD. A DEADLY ENEMY.

Bud Mac Phearson’s job is to protect Mallory Christiani and her young daughter, Emily—not to get personally involved with either. But after Emily disappears and the trail leads directly to a well-known crime boss, Mac can’t refuse the beautiful single mother’s pleas for help. With assassins hot on their trail and danger around every corner, the tentative partners race to find the missing key needed for the ransom…even as they try to fight the attraction blooming between them. But when Mac trades his own life for Emily’s, Mallory must risk it all to save the man she’s come to love…

Orignally published April 1990 in Harlequin Intrique #135.

Mac gets a frantic call of his good friend Kevin telling him someone may be after his family and he needs help. As he is in the middle of explaining he suffers a stroke. Unable to communicate, he knows Mac will keep Mallory and Emily safe. Mac shows up at the hospital and discovers that Mallory has no idea what is happening. When Mac says that he is to take Mallory and Emily out of town to keep them safe at Kevin's request but doesn't know the reason why, she is sure he is mistaken. Once Mallory gets the call that her daughter has been taken she knows that Mac is her only hope of getting her back. They have to find the package while being hunted by those that don't want them to find it on a deadline. Their romance builds steadily, and despite being dated (phone booths, VCRs, typewriters) this quick, enjoyable read is filled with action and suspense.
