First Chapter, First Paragraph is a weekly meme hosted by Yvonne of Socrates' Book Reviews. Share the first paragraph (or a few) of the book you are reading or thinking about reading.

"You're breaking my heart, Buttercup." Cheyenne McCafferty buried her nose in the gelding's mane and smiled when she heard him snuffle, even as they tried to blink away the moisture that continued to gather at the corners of her eyes. "Yeah, well, you might think the name is an indignity, big guy." She straightened and rubbed her palm gently over the horse's cheek, looking him straight in his weary, lackluster eyes. "But we both know it's perfect for you." His ears flicked forward and Chey had zero doubt that this horse knew exactly who she was, despite the more than decade-long gap since she'd last seen him.

I chose this story a former barrel racer, now owner of part horse rescue/rehab and lavender farm after falling in love with the Canadian series Heartland.

She could barely get the words out. "Tell me you did not."
"She did." And if that voice didn't set Chey so far back on her heels that it almost planted her a**-first on the packed dirt, one look at Wyatt as she stepped into the stables - her stables- sure did.

Prologue
My mother likes to hum. She stands at the stove, stirring this, tasting that, and humming, humming, humming. I sit in a chair by the table. I have a job. Grate the cheese. It's an easy job. The queso blanco crumbles to the touch. But I'm proud to do my part.

"You don't have a brain tumor," said my best friend, who, conveniently, was also a neurologist. "Are you sure?" I asked. "Yes, Emma. Don't look so disappointed." "I'm not! I just..you know, my vision was wonky last night. Then I spaced out driving into the city today." Granted, last night I'd accidentally turned on the superbright flashlight while it was aimed right at my face, but still.. the retinal afterimage had taken some time to subside. As for spacing out, I drove into Chicago a few times a week, so it was normal that I didn't take note of every detail on the forty-five minute drive. Still, I couldn't help asking, "Are you sure it's not parahypnagogia?"

There was a pause, "We've had our differences, it's true." "You kicked me out when I needed you most. Why should I care if you need me now?"

A cheerless drizzle blurred any view of the body on the beach. Mist formed halos around the lampposts along the pier, but didn't diffuse the glaring portable lights that had been put in place by first responders. In a grotesque parody of catching someone in the spotlight on center stage, they shone a harsh light on the covered form. A police helicopter swept in low. Its searchlight was unforgivingly bright as it tracked the length of the pier.

The unleashed Labrador had run ahead of his owner, and it was the dog, splashing in the surf, that had made the gruesome discovery. One of the spectators on the pier, overhearing the exchanges of facts, fictions, and laments, smiled in self-satisfied silence.

A spoiled tart. Or was it spoiled brat? I purse my lips and try not to sneer at Tripp Porter as he drones on with a status update about the continuous permit delays, his monotonous voice flat enough to sink a yapping Jack Russell into a coma. Meanwhile I'm struggling to recall exactly what this arrogant ass called me at the holiday party. Of course, he was oblivious to the fact that I was standing on the other side of the pillar while he badmouthed me, his crimson bow tie hanging loose around his collar, his tongue flapping after him umpteenth gimlet.

It's been years, and he looks so different, but...I frown and my feet falter as I watch him climb the steps. No. It can't possibly be him.

This sounded like a good Valentine's week read!  Have you read it?

Frankie Russo's head was already throbbing when her cell phone started blaring salsa music. At five o'clock in the morning she immediately regretted the new ringtone. She tried to tamp down the dread in the pit of her stomach as she stumbled out of the bathroom. Nobody called at five in the morning with good news. Her hand swiped along the wall, searching for a light switch in unfamiliar territory. Where had she left her phone? She stumbled just as her fingers found the switch. The unpacked boxes in her new apartment made her dance through a maze. She was dripping wet, adjusting towels, and deep down she caught herself hoping she'd miss the call.

She needed to tell someone. She needed to call 911. And yet, she didn't dare turn the phone back on. What the hell just happened?

Eeny, Meeny, Miny Moe. FBI Special Agent Atlee Pine stared up at the grim facade of the prison complex that housed some of the most dangerous human predators on earth. She had come to see one of them tonight. ADX Florence, about a hundred mile south of Denver, was the only supermax prison in the federal system. The supermax component was one of the four separate encampments that made up the Federal Correctional Complex located here. In total, more than nine hundred inmates were incarcerated on this parcel of dirt.

The moment, an eternity in the making, had finally come. Atlee Pine leaned forward, her lips an inch from the thick glass. "Where's my sister?"

He needed killing. She'd researched, studied, planned the who, when, how and why for more than a year, and had chosen Nigel B. McEnroy to be the first. At forty-three, he had a wife of eleven years, two children - both girls ages nine and six. He had, over the course of eighteen years, built his own executive headhunting business with two partners. As CEO of Perfect Placement, he oversaw recruitment both on and off planet.

A lot of women want the world to see them a certain way. It's my job to create those transformations, one forty-five-minute session at a time. My clients seem different when I've finished helping them. They grow more confident, radiant. Happier, even. But I can only offer a temporary fix. People invariably revert to their former selves. True change requires more than the tools I wield.

Remember the rules:  Be open and truthful, and avoid pivoting away from any embarrassment or pain these questions provoke. If this initial query, which is relatively mild, unsettles you, then you might be one of the women who wash out of the study.

Prologue
When the Selective Service notice comes for Tiger, Kate's first instinct is to throw it away. Surely this is every American mother's first instinct? Pretend it got lost in the mail, buy Tiger a few more weeks of freedom before the U.S. Army sends another letter - by which time, this god-awful war in Vietnam might be over.

The other mothers didn't do the terrible thing that she did. She deserves to be punished; she has enjoyed every happy day of the past sixteen years like it was something she borrowed, and not, finally, the time for payback has arrived.

"Guess what I found in my Christmas stocking this morning?" Aunt Peg said. I paused, holding the phone to my ear. Where Aunt Peg was concerned, a guess was a risky venture. Seventy years old and sharp as a bee sting, she made it her mission to keep my on my toes.

June 1919
England
They say when you believe you're about to die your entire life passes before your eyes in a flurry of poignant images, but all I could think of, rather absurdly, was that I should have worn the blue hat. Well, that and that my sister would never forgive me for proving my mother right.

He could feel the chill, coming in through the cracks around the windowpanes. Clumsily he got up and lumbered over to the window. Reaching for one of the thick towels he kept handy, he stuffed it around the rotting frame. The incoming draft made a soft, hissing sound in the towel, a sound that vaguely pleased him.
