Weekly Reading Wrap Up (SP/IMWAYR?)

Forbidden Promises by Katee Robert #4
Sloan finally makes an escape from her family to live on her own. She gets a job and is living in her SIL aunt's house across the country. Her neighbor is the unfriendly, but intriguing. Jude has been watching the house waiting for the Aunt to return as a means to seek his revenge against his family. Sloan is a complication that he figures he can use. Neither has an idea how they are linked or are ready for their attraction. When their identities are revealed and whereabouts known the action and tension ramps up. Will they be able to satisfy their families and stay together?

Best Man by Katy Evans (audio)
Lia's best wedding ever is about to happen.  It is the day before and everything is shaping up to be perfect.  She discovers her fiancee Aaron, who despite his promise, got drunk the night before and forgot the rings.  Too hungover to go get them, he suggests they use whatever they can find, Lia decides to make the 5 hour drive.  To her frustration Miles, the best man, is coming along at Aaron's request.  Miles and Lia had a one night stand the first week of college. As they make the drive we find out their history and a few other secrets along the way. Lia starts out spoiled and clueless, but learns the truth the hard way.  With what she now knows will she go through with the wedding? What will happen with Lia and Miles?  A quick listen narrated by Grace Grant.  I do hope Lia's brother West gets his own story.

Smoke Screen by Terri Blackstock
Smoke Jumper Nate has been grounded due to an injury. He decides to go home and support his mother and brother as his father is being released from prison after being pardoned.  His returning opens old wounds as he was accused of starting a fire long ago.  Brenna's life is falling apart as her ex-husband is running for mayor and is trying to get custody to help with his family man platform.  Her Ex has the backing of his powerful family.  She drinks to cope with the pressure/anxiety when the kids are with their father.  Brenna and Nate have a history as it is her father Nick's dad was accused of killing.  A fast-paced, second chance clean read.

How Quickly She Disappears by Raymond Fleischmann
In 1941 Elisabeth and her family are living in Alaska.  She and her 11 year old daughter spend a lot of time together as her husband is teaching. Twenty years ago Elisabeth's twin sister disappeared without a trace.  She has always felt she is still alive.  A stranger comes to town and when his plane breaks down asks to stay at their house.  Alfred is strange and makes her uncomfortable.  Shortly after coming to town he murders a local, and once in prison will only speak to Elisabeth.  He tells her he knows what happened to her sister and if she visits him, he will reveal all to her.  Desperate, she suffers his creepy obsession .  The mystery of who he is and what he knows is compelling and kept me glued to the pages.  The disappointing ending leaves so much hanging.

Sorry to hear the last book you listed had a disappointing ending.
We're expecting a heat wave too which seems appropriate for July 4th :)

I was interested in the Alaska one until you mentioned the disappointing ending :( Our library has been doing curbside for almost a month and do a limited open next week. Hopefully it will work but I have my doubts since no masks will be required.

It's hot here. I rearranged my work schedule a bit today (since I'm still working from home) so I could go to my parents' pool. I still need to get my walk in today so I'm hoping it will be cooler than when I usually take it at 1 om.

Hope it doesn't get too hot. Our library is now fully open but I haven't been back. I should really get into the swing again. Your books are pretty much unfamiliar to me this week, although of course I recognise some of the authors.
