Reading Wrap Up

The Secret of Pembrooke Park by Julie Klassen
Abigail's family has suffered a financial downturn due to her encouraging her father to invest with her uncle. They have to sell their home and most of their belongings.  As distant relatives they are offered the estate Pembrooke Park for a year.  They arrive to a home that looks like the previous occupants left in a hurry and gossip says it was under scandalous circumstances.  As Abby gets the home ready for her family she hears the stories (some involving a ghost), and is determined to find the secret.  The young curate William may know more than he is telling, and when Abby starts to get anonymous letters he wants to help. Their friendship slowly develops into more with a few bumps along the way. I did have one of the secrets figured out early, but there were a few surprises.  Another good historical from this author.

Where They Found Her by Kimberly McCreight
Molly is still in the grieving process when she is assigned a story by her boss.  A body has been found in the woods close to the college campus.  This would be her first major story and she wonders if it will help pull her out of the depression she's been experiencing.  She is blindsided when she learns that the body is that of a newborn.  Her husband is worried that it may be too much for her in this fragile state.  She is determined to see the story through.  We also meet Becky, a teen working towards her GED and whose mother Jenna has disappeared.  As well as the Chief of Police's wife Barbara.  The women's stories past and present come together in a shocking reveal.

The Stranger by Harlan Coben (audio)
Attorney Adam is attending a lacrosse meeting when a stranger tells him that his wife has lied to him by faking a pregnancy then disappears.  Adam is confused and can't figure out why this guy would did this.  He confronts his wife Corrine, she doesn't deny the accusation.  Shortly after, she disappears and set Adams off on a quest for the truth.  There are other secrets that are revealed to unsuspecting people.  Adam's investigation leads to a truth bigger than anyone expected with a shocking ending that I did not see coming. An enjoyable audio narrated by George Newbern.

The Bookseller by Cynthia Swanson
Kitty and her friend operate a small bookstore and things couldn't be better.  She keeps having this reoccurring dream that she is married with kids.  The dreams are strange and when she finds herself in them she can't remember things but each time the dream progresses.  Kitty is at time frantic to remember in the dreams and when she wakes she is relieved.  As the story progresses you begin to wonder what is going on when the revelation comes, I was not surprised but very invested in the story.  A good debut.

The Secret Place by Tana French
Detective Steven Moran is working cold cases, but really want to get on the Murder Squad.  A teenager Holly, whom he is familiar with walks into his office and gives him a picture of young man killed last year with the caption, "I know who killed him" on it that she got off "The Secret Place", a bulletin board at the girls boarding school she attends.  Lead Detective Conway on this case is a bit skeptical but agrees to go to the school with Moran to investigate further.  What they find is rife with  mean girls, secrets, and lies that has them running out of time.  An absorbing page turner.

The week started off with  regency and then ended with suspense/thrillers.  I need a few lighter books to give my brain and heart a rest!  My daughter and son-in-law are the proud owners of a new home. The next couple of weeks will be busy with painting and cleaning.

Today, my husband and I celebrate 35 wonderful years together. We wonder how those years have passed so quickly.  On the next rainy day we will go and see Minions to celebrate.  We love Kevin, Stuart and Bob (Dave and Larry too)!

Oh Nise, lots of books I recognise there. I also enjoyed most though couldn't read Tana French's novel. From memory it was part of a series wasn't it, and I just couldn't get into it.

Have a lovely week and HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!!

Happy Anniversary! I've wondered about the Tanya French book. Do you need to read the others in the series first?

I've been on a suspense/thriller kick lately, and I know what you mean about needing to throw in something light! But first, I have to read Where They Found Her. Just got it from the library. :-)

Happy anniversary! I liked The Bookseller too. Not sure why I haven't read The Stranger since I love Coben and it's been on my shelf for months! Glad it's good.
