Fin’s funeral suit was a year old, worn three times, already too small. He knew his mother was sick. He knew she went to the hospital to get treatments. He saw the dark blue lines and dots on her chest. “My tattoos,” she said. She sang “Popeye the Sailor Man” and raised her skinny arms as if to flex her Popeye muscles, to make him laugh. He knew she was sick. He knew people died. But he never thought she would die. Not his mother. Not really. Lady came to the funeral, an unmistakably foreign presence in the bare, white Congregational church: she wore large sunglasses and wept audibly.

I haven't heard of this book but the opening paragraph sounds great. This is my first time joining this meme. You can find my intro here
Intriguing teaser! My teaser comes from Strong Poison by Dorothy Sayers.
Interesting. I really can't tell from that blurb what direction the story will go in, so I guess that is a good beginning hook. Enjoy it.
Sounds like a good story. I am assuming I will need a tissue or two. Looking forward to your review.
Sad... must have been a lady who was respected.
I definitely want to read this one, the only decision is whether to go with print or audio!
I'd keep reading, sounds very good, sad, but good.
Definitely love the intro and want to read this one -- enjoy. Thank you for joining us Nise.
I like the start to this one. It caught my attention.
This has been on my list for some time. I know I'd keep reading.
The opening for Fin & Lady grabbed me. This sounds like it might be a sad story. I hope you enjoy it.
Very interesting. Makes me wonder who Lady is. Nice choice!
I haven't heard of this one before but I'd definitely keep reading.
I suppose many children think in the same way. I never expected my mom and dad to pass away. I thought they would always be with me.
I like Cathleen Schine's books and hope this is a good one. I would certainly keep reading after the opening. I hope you'll be reviewing it when you're finished reading!
