But when a woman offers Sebastian a small wooden carving for sale, claiming it belonged to Russia’s Empress Catherine, it’s a problem. There’s no proof. Sebastian believes that the plain carving—known as “The Firebird”—is worthless. But Nicola’s held it, and she knows the woman is telling the truth, and is in desperate need of the money the sale of the heirloom could bring.
Compelled to help, Nicola turns to a man she once left, and still loves: Rob McMorran, whose own psychic gifts are far greater than hers. With Rob to help her “see” the past, she follows a young girl named Anna from Scotland to Belgium and on into Russia. There, in St. Petersburg—the once-glittering capital of Peter the Great’s Russia—Nicola and Rob unearth a tale of love and sacrifice, of courage and redemption…an old story that seems personal and small, perhaps, against the greater backdrops of the Jacobite and Russian courts, but one that will forever change their lives.
Each time I finish a book by Susanna, I am convinced it is my favorite until I read the next one! I loved how the author choose to tell both stories. She does this so effortlessly that I never missed being away from either storyline. Each setting of Anna's story was wonderfully vivid and alive. It was wonderful to revisit with characters from previous books. I hope we revisit with Rob and Nicola. I struggled with not reading this book too quickly as I did not want it to end!

I did wonder about what happened to Anna afterwards..
I like her books so much and this is the only one I haven't read! not available here in Melbourne so this will go on the waiting list.
Sounds really good. Glad u enjoyed it.
I enjoyed The Winter Sea -I listened to that on audio. I will be keeping an eye out for this one too. Good to know you enjoyed it. Think I might 'read' this one, sometimes I get lost listening to audio. Especially when two stories are being told.
It's always a good sign when you don't want to read too quickly.
YES!!! I keep putting this one off because I don't want to have to wait so long for her next one!!
LOL so true, I've got this one and like Staci I look at it, long to read it cause I know it's going to be great and leave it another week lol
I am a big fan of Susanna Kearsley too and I loved getting to read about Rob as an adult. His relationship with Nicola was one of my favorite parts of the book. I wouldn't mind seeing them again in another book. My favorite is still The Winter Sea but this may be tied with The Shadowy Horses for second place!
I just started reading one of her books for the first time and I'm hooked. Wish I had the time to read it cover to cover.
I am currently reading this book. I am enjoying it. I don't think I've read any other Kearsley books. Thanks for your review.
I am a new follower of your blog.
This is my upcoming weekend read and I can't wait! I love her books as well.
Glad you liked it. I will get this one sooner or later. :-)
