Tuesday Intro/Teaser

First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros is a weekly meme introduced by Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea  and now hosted by Vicki of I'd Rather Be At The Beach every Tuesday. To participate share the opening paragraph or two of a book you've decided to read based on that paragraph. Please feel free to join in, First Chapter~First Paragraph~Tuesday Intros.

Prologue
The Woman on Hester Street, 1969
Varya
Varya is thirteen. New to her are three more inches of height and the dark patch of fur between her legs. Her breasts are palm sized, her nipples pink dimes. Her hair is waist length and medium brown - not the black of her brother Daniel's or Simon's lemon curls, nor Klara's glint of bronze. In the morning, she plaits it in two French braids, she likes the way they whisk her waist, like horses' tails. Her tiny nose is no one's, or so she thinks. By twenty, it will have risen to assume its full, hawkish majesty: her mother's nose. but not yet.

The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Ambrosia of The Purple Booker

'What I heard, " said Daniel, "is she can tell fortunes. What'll happen in your life - whether you'll have a good one or a bad one. And there's something else.: He braced his hands in the door frame and leaned in. "She can say when you'll die."

Hmmm...well, the beginning does provide a good description of Varya. I'd have a read a bit more to see what the book was about.

I've seen this book around and been curious. Thanks for giving me a taste of it. This week I am spotlighting Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn from my TBR pile. Happy reading!

Your intro is interesting. It doesn't read like 1969. It feels like the setting is a century earlier. I'd definitely like to read more.

Ok, I am curious despite the odd beginning.

Are there gypsies involved? Does the girl become the fortune teller? How does her family end up with so many shades of hair? So many quesitons.
