Weekly Reading Wrap Up (SP/IMWAYR?)

Not A Sound by Heather Gudenkauf
Amelia is working to get her life back together after a tragic accident caused her deafness.  She hit rock bottom with drinking and depression, but is working to make a comeback.  Her job interview is successful and she begins working again in a medical office in the records department. While out with her service dog she stumbles across the body of a former friend. When that investigation is ongoing,  she soon discovers some discrepancies at her job, and when she begins looking further into them trouble begins to brew.  A quick read that had me turning the pages long into the night wondering just who she could trust.

The Wicked City by Beatriz Williams
The author does a great job of telling two stories. Gin during the jazz age and the decisions she had to make a life for herself in the wicked city and Ella in the present that moved into that same building  years later after leaving her husband. Both women were strong, independent and fearless.  Not my favorite by this author, but an overall good read.

Come Back to Me by Sara Foster (audio)
Chole and Alex meet her work colleague at a restaurant. Mark brings along a date that he met recently. When Alex and Julia meet, it is apparent that these two know each other, but neither are totally honest as to how and when which leads to some frustrating dysfunction.  The character's backstories are told before all the secrets are revealed some that are tragic. Brilliantly narrated by Heather Wilds

Come Sundown by Nora Roberts
Bodine has been running her family's ranch/resort and does a great job.  When former childhood friend Callen returns from Hollywood he is determined to stay and finds himself intrigued by Bo.  He is hired on at the ranch that her brothers run, but due to circumstances finds himself working at the resort that lends to their blooming relationship. Meanwhile we also get the story of Bo's Aunt Alice whom she has never met as she disappeared years ago. The backstory is a bit dark, but leads to the triumphant ending. The family of characters is easy to get behind and love.  It would be nice to revisit in the future.  Another great read by a favorite author.

Burntown by Jennifer McMahon
Eva's family is torn apart by a flood.  It is a story that her mother always told her along with a warning to watch out for the chicken man or snake eyes.  In order to protect her they lived among a group of outcasts and Eva goes by the name of Necco.  When her companion is murdered she is on the run and learns the truth of her past.  Her father was in possession of something that got him killed and continues to threaten.  The characters are interestingly weird and deliver a good story.

The Sister Chase by Sarah Healy
After their mother's death eighteen year old Mary does an admirable job of taking care of her 4 year old sister Hannah. Prior to her mother's death they ran their family hotel.  The taxes forced them to find another means of support.  Mary and Hannah journey all over the country as their story is told. Mary makes some bad decisions and at times is unlikeable, but is determined to provide the best for Hannah. A couple of secrets are revealed in this unputdownable book.

To Hate Adam Conner by Elle Maise (audio)
Lucy has left her cheating boyfriend and is temporarily staying with her friend Olive.  She happens to live next door to star actor Adam Conner.  One day she is spying on him and his young son from a tree when Aiden falls into the pool.  She jumps over the fence to save him and is arrested for being a stalker.  She is fuming and when he asks her if she could help him out with taking care of Aiden the sparks fly.  Narrated by the great duo of Lidia Dornet and Sebastian York.

The beginning of the month got away from me with our town's annual celebration, visitors, waiting for a new family addition and spending time with family.  All of our company has gone home and I look forward to some reading time on the deck before school starts.

We welcome Milo James to our family.

(Reposting my comment since I forgot to link back to my blog...)

I enjoyed "The Wicked City," but it is the only one of her books I've read so I don't have a comparison. I do have one or two of her other books on my Kindle, so I'm hoping to get to them soon.

My Monday Update post is here

Looks like you had a lot of great books on your list this past week! I read the book before "To Hate Adam Connor" (Can't remember the name!!!) that featured Olive and her beau. I haven't picked this one up and am interested to hear what you think :)

Interesting. Enjoyed your reviews of the books I've read and the ones I want. Funnily enough I was about to put out a book for the book fair that I got there another year by Nicola Moriarty, but hadn't read it. Then I decided I'd keep it and read it sometime. I'd love a follow up to Come Sundown but I guess....!

HI Milo! What a cutie.

I've heard mixed things about the Beatriz Williams book. I may skip it.

The Jennifer McMahon book sounds really good.

Aw, what a precious baby - congratulations!

I was disappointed in my last Williams book, too. It sounds like I need to pick up The Sisters Chase.

Nice variety of books. Come Sundown wasn't my favorite Roberts because I thought the romance got slighted in favor of Aunt Alice's story which was a little grim for my tastes. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
