The Pattern Artist by Nancy Moser
Annie has dreams and is willing to work hard towards achieving them. She leaves her family to work as an upstairs maid, but when her talent for altering clothing is discovered she helps the lady's maids in their duties. Excitement builds as she travels with the family to New York. There she learns that her talent is being taken advantage of by the maids and will not rise like she wants. Determined to find a way she befriends and then runs away with two friends looks to better their lives too. They find jobs and Annie's leads to work at Macy's. She excels in that job and it leads to a job with Butterick Pattern Company, which then leads to more life changing events. A thoroughly enjoyable story, rich in history and good character development. A clean read with some faith elements.

Joana, Florian and Emilia are part of a group trying to get to the coast to catch one of the many ships promising to help them escape. Each from a different country, each with reasons of their own for wanting to escape. Their journey is hard, heartbreaking and at times horrific. Alfred is a young soldier working on making the ship ready for it's voyage. Each chapter is told in the alternating voices of these four characters, each with their own secrets. Beautifully written, well researched and highly recommended.

What an interesting week it has been. A short one with Friday's holiday. Our leaves our finally off the trees and picked up. The mild weather has helped to make the job easier. I do not like wet leaves!

Yeah wet leaves are no fun. :) I still have picking up to do, but it's coming along. I am glad for the mostly mild weather. Salt to the sea looks good, and curious about Bullsye too.
I have heard great things about Salt to Sea, I'm intrigued. Have a great week.
I hadn't realised you got a holiday for Veterans Day. The 11/11 is Remembrance Day here in Australia but Anzac Day (in April or May) is a 'bigger' celebration and we get a public holiday for that - more about the diggers (soldiers) of WWI & WWII.
I've never swept up leaves, being an Aussie (but then I've never jumped in piles either).
Have a great week!
Ahh! You're reading A Promise of Fire next - I loved that one. It was a 5 star from me. :) Really hope you enjoy it too. Have a lovely week.
I have some wet leaves on my patio...ugh!
Enjoy your reading...I like the look of A Lowcountry Christmas.
Thanks for visiting my blog, and have a great week!
I hate wet leaves too and we've got plenty right now! Have a good week.
I have Salt to the Sea in my TBR pile. I am really looking forward to it.
Salt to the Sea sounds good. I keep meaning to add it to my TBR pile but haven't yet. My goal right now to to get books off the TBR pile. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
The nicer weather is making it easier to do some clean up yard work. Have a great week!
