Weekly Reading Thoughts (SP/IMWAYR?)

The Girl From Summer Hill by Jude Deveraux

A modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice. The community theater is putting on the play P&P with two Hollywood stars taking a break from their filming schedule. Casey is a chef, providing food for the cast and crew. She is also renting the guest house for Tate, one of the movie stars.  Their meeting gets off to a rough start.  Tate is playing Darcy and Casey is coerced to play Lizzie.  The other actors cast in the play somehow fit the characters as well has having secrets they don't want revealed.  A fun twist on the classic story.  This is the first book in what promises to be a good series.

Fan the Flames by Katie Ruggle (#2)
Second book in the Search and Rescue series. Ian is both a member of a search & rescue team and motorcycle club.  At times each side wonders where his true loyalties lie. Rory was raised by paranoid parents waiting for doomsday to arrive. Thus she led a sheltered life and is socially stunted, but does a great job owing and operating the gun shop her parents owned.  Since they were kids Ian has looked out for and admired Rory.  When Rory runs into trouble with some of the members of the motorcycle Ian has her back which causes trouble.  Ian is arrested when an item of his is found on a dead body. Ian and Rory have to work together to stay alive and discover whom they can trust.  Both Rory and Ian are great characters that you can't help but love.  Their relationship was slow growing but sweet. Looking forward to the next story in the series.

The Total Package by Stephanie Evanovich
Tyson Palmer is a NFL quarterback on his way out before his time due to alcohol and drugs.  At his college reunion he hooks up with his former tutor, nice girl Ella.  Shortly after he hits rock bottom and is faced with an exceptional offer from a team owner: attend rehab, work with a trainer, and lead the owner's team to the Superbowl.  Tyson can't believe this offer, but takes him up it. Four years later he is on the cusp of doing exactly what was asked of him.  A reporter has been assigned to the team that he does not recognize.  He soon figures out where he knows her from and their past collides with the future.  Tyson has made the most of his second chance, will he give one? A fun, feel good read that is great for an afternoon at the beach or pool.

We spent a lovely day together as a family celebrating Father's Day. The guys went golfing in the morning and then it was a cook-out around the pool.  Even 4 month old Nora got in on the action.

Awww love that picture of Norah in the pool!

I haven't heard of that Evanovich novel though don't always like her collaborations.

I struggled a little with Fool Me Once. I didn't dislike it but have like his other work better I think.

I too like P&P retellings. I'll add that one to my list. AND I too didn't love Fool Me Once (didn't hate it either).

There have been a few Austen retellings that I've enjoyed... this might be another. Sounds like a perfect Father's Day... Nora is adorable!

Fan the Flames looks like a book I might be interested in. I have not heard of it before, but it looks fun. I've never read any of the Austen books. I don't think I've read any retellings either.

Sounds like you all had a fun Father's Day weekend!

I read The Last Mile and Fool Me Once. The new Evanovich looks good to me-- wonder if it's a stand-alone. I don't read Steph Plum series anymore, but back in the day I couldn't get enough of it :)

It sounds like a really fun Father's Day for all. When grandchildren are involved it has to be good! My daughter is expecting, so we will be new grandparents soon. Our first! I'm wanting to get myself to the pool. Let the summer begin!

I'm usually resistant to Austen retellings but I thoroughly enjoyed Eligible, so I'm changing my tune. P&P is timeless and always fun to revisit.
