The Martain (audio)

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

I can't believe it too me so long to get to this audiobook!  I originally had it in print, but  switched to audio when RC Bray got rave reviews on his narration.  You feel like you are right there with Mark as he tells the story.  I absolutely loved his humor, snark and how he "scienced the sh*t" out of his situation.   The other characters - those back at NASA and the crew that left him behind were just as compelling. The technology, terminology did not distract from this wonderful listening experience.Wondering how and if he would be rescued was on the edge of your seat listening.  Do yourself a favor and listen to this book.

Is the movie as good as the book?

I have this one on audio and have been waiting for our next road trip. I think my husband would like it too.

I didn't love the movie so I just can't get excited about reading the book even though everyone's loved it.

My son has the e-book, read it and loved it. He recommended it to me, and I hesitated because I'm not as into science as he is and I know some of the story's technical, but I see that all my fellow bloggers are loving it too. I guess I'll have to read it sooner, rather than later. Good review!

Exciting review Nise. I haven't decided if this one is for me or not. I would probably read it before watching it though. I can tell you really enjoyed this one.

Yes! Loved the audio too and was very diffident about going to the movie because I feel in love with the narrator being so Mark Watney. But the movie delivered! Would watch it again and most likely will. Loved it on the big screen.

So glad you liked it too. I look forward to seeing the movie with my DH who always says "I'll wait for the movie." Sadly he is not a reader.

Everyone raved about the audio of this, but I haven't been compelled to pick it up. I wonder if I should reconsider.

I really enjoyed the audio as well and the movie (in 3-d) was great as well.

I really enjoyed the movie but unfortunately haven't read the book, which I would like to read the book one day but given that I saw the movie not that long ago I probably will have to wait as I have that on my mind. Glad to hear you enjoyed this!
