Reading Wrap-Up/What Are You Reading?

Sheila at Book Journey hosts this weekly event where we celebrate what we are reading for the week as well as books completed the previous week. I use this this weekly meme as a way to give short, concise thoughts on the books I've read.

Spring has finally arrived!  Even though sunglasses are needed, we still need our coats as it is chilly!

Thoughts on the Books I Read Last Week:

Unbecoming by Rebecca Scherm
Grace/Julie has been living/hiding in Paris for two years. She has studied art history and is working for an art restorer/appraiser. Her story unfolds and we wonder how reliable she is as the narrator. She met Riley when she was in the sixth grade and fell in love with him and his family. She wanted nothing more than to remain a part of that family. She has big plans, Riley seems happy with the status-quo, but he loves Grace and encourages her to branch out. A situation causes her to want to get out of Garland, she manipulates, and gets out. When she returns the story takes a turn that has lead her to Paris and living a life of lies. Her past does catch up. A page turning debut.

Mistress Firebrand by Donna Thorland
Third book in the Renegades of the Revolution series that features women figuring out a way to live, work and survive during the American Revolution. More thoughts on Wednesday.

Cane and Abe by James Grippando (audio)
Prosecutor Abe Beckman is called when another body is found in the Everglades.  Could it be another victim of the "Cutter", a serial killer that dumps bodies in the cane fields?  The victim does not have the signature of the killer, but has ties to Abe.  As those ties become known, his wife goes missing and he finds himself under suspicion.  He is trying to find his wife, as well as prove he had nothing to do with her disappearance and the death of the latest victim found.  Fast paced, full of twists and action that keep you guessing, until the very end.  Jonathan Davis did a great job narrating.  I could not stop listening.

Best Kept Secret by Amy Hatvany (audio)
Cadence is a young mom, freelance writer when her marriage ends.  It was heartbreaking and she has a hard time dealing with the aftermath.  Slowly her wine drinking gets out of control. When her young son calls his father in a panic to come and get him, Cadence knows her secret can't be kept anymore.  Heartbreaking, raw, realistic and surprisingly an enjoyable read/listen. Joy Osmanski does an excellent job narrating Cadence's heartbreak, anger, shame and determination.
