What Are You Reading?

Sheila at Book Journey hosts this weekly event where we celebrate what we are reading for the week as well as books completed the previous week.

Last week was a much better reading week!

Thoughts on the Books I Read Last Week:

Just One Day by Gayle Foreman

Allyson has always been agreeable, compliant, easy going until she meets and has her heart broken by Willem, a dutch actor she meets on a graduation trip to Europe, a cultural extravaganza her parents arranged for her.  They spend one day in Paris and when she wakes up he is gone.  She spends a year trying to come to terms with what happened as well as who she is and who she wants to be.  A delightful, mature young adult read that will have a sequel!

Sweet Tooth by Ian McEwan (audio)

Juliet Stevenson expertly narrates this story of Serena, a lover of books, who  is recruited in college as a spy for MI5 in the 70s. Her assignment "Sweet Tooth" - to spy on a young writer begins to become difficult when she falls in love with him. Serena tells the story in a flashback, and we are given a hint as to what happens in the first sentence, but how it happens it absorbing and entertaining, even though it unwound very slowly.

Touch and Go by Lisa Gardner

D.D. Warren makes an quick appearance in this novel, but it is Tessa and Wyatt that are the stars of this book. Libby and her husband, Justin are working on their marriage after Libby finds out Justin has cheated on her. She is not sure she has the strength to make things work. After a "date night" they find intruders in their home and are abducted along with their 15 year old daughter. Tessa, a former cop, now PI is called in by the company to investigate. Wyatt becomes involved as a New Hampshire police officer. They soon discover this more than a kidnapping for ransom. A page turner with a couple of twists that kept me guessing. I hope Tessa and Wyatt return in future books.

The Dinner by Herman Koch

Paul and his wife Claire are meeting his brother Serge and his wife Babette at a restaurant to discuss a disturbing incident that involved their 15 year old sons.  The story progresses with each course served and it becomes increasingly clear that this is a strange family, and the incident is going to be disturbing.  The resolution is even darker and makes you wonder how far a person will go to protect their family.  Even though these were hard to like characters, this was another good read from a Dutch author.

Another blogging friend didn't enjoy this Lisa G book but it may have been a mood issue not the book.

I started reading Just One Day but didn't get to finish it before I had to return it to the library. I may give it another try later this year though maybe I'll wait till I can read Just One Year. Maybe I'll like Willem more that way.

Have a great week :)

The Dinner by Herman Koch sounds intriguing! For some reason, a South Park episode came to mind when reading the very ominous summary.

It looks like you had some interesting reading.
I thought I recognized the author Ian McEwan. Although the British spy fits I am not certain.
Hope your reading continues to be good. :-)
