Started Early, Took My Dog

A day like any other for security chief Tracy Waterhouse, until she makes a purchase she hadn't bargained for. One moment of madness is all it takes for Tracy's humdrum world to be turned upside down, the tedium of everyday life replaced by fear and danger at every turn.

Witnesses to Tracy's Faustian exchange in the Merrion Centre in Leeds are Tilly, an elderly actress teetering on the brink of her own disaster, and Jackson Brodie who has returned to his home county in search of someone else's roots. All three characters learn that the past is never history and that no good deed goes unpunished.

I wanted to read this book because it was a Regan Arthur Imprint and every RA book I've read has been fantastic. What I did not know was that this is part of a series featuring Jackson Brodie, former police inspector turned private investigator. While this book stood well on it's own, I felt like I was missing out on not knowing Jackson's background. With that said, I enjoyed this book immensely.  It was brilliant and witty. You need to pay attention as there are quite a few characters to keep track of and their place in the story as well as flashback's from the 70s. I thought for sure what little Courtney was collecting and keeping in her backpack was going to figure into the story.  I read this as part of a read-a-long with more discussion at the Reagan Arthur Books Challenge Blog.

This sounds good. I think I have one of this author's books either on my wishlist or on my Nook. I'm not sure where anymore. Too many lists. LOL

i read " When will there be good news" by Atikinson, and I too enjoyed it even though I didn't read the first Brodie book. Thanks Nise. I already have this one on my staircase.

I read somewhere else today that someone felt the same as you - that they felt a bit was missing with not having read the previous books. I have a few of her books to read one of these days.

I saw Kathy's review and knew I'd have to start with the first one!

I've been wanting to read this one. I have read several of the books featuring Jackson Brodie, but started with one called When Will There Be Good News? before realizing that there was a series. I then read Case Histories and One Good Turn.

Hope you do try the others....

It sounds like an interesting read. I will have to add it to my TBR list.

I was a bit surprised when I saw that this was a Regan Arthur book, precisely because it isn't the first book in the series.

I have been reading them from the beginning and really like them.

I have a copy of one of her books but thanks for the heads up about maybe reading the other one first. I'm with you about the RA books...they've been awesome reads for me too!

This sounds like something I'd love, but it's good to know it's part of a series. Maybe I should start at the beginning, for once!
