The ties among them endure for years, surviving marriages happy and troubled, unrequited loves and unspoken longings, hard-won successes and devastating breakdowns, and Charleston's dark legacy of racism and class divisions. But the final test of friendship that brings them to San Francisco is something no one is prepared for. SOUTH OF BROAD is Pat Conroy at his finest, a long-awaited work from a great American writer whose passion for life and language knows no bounds.
Pat Conroy's book has given me a love for a city that I have never visited and would love to some day. But I will be disappointed as I will not met the characters from this book, each one I really came to love even if I started out not liking a couple of them. This is an epic story that you can't rush through even though tempted. South of Broad would make an excellent book club selection and would deliver hours of discussion with its subjects of suicide, favoritism, social class, prejudice, mental illness, addictions, relationships, religion, loss, and redemption. Thank you to Staci for highly recommending this book.

This has been on my wish list for a little bit.
This has been on my wish list since it came out. Your review makes me want to read it -- and soon.
Glad you liked it Nise. I'm still working on getting back to it.
So thrilled that you loved this one too Nise. I totally understand what you mean about wanting to meet the characters while in Charleston..I would love to meet Leo!!
Conroy's greatest character in this book is definitely Charleston. I loved Leo, too. I wish life would have been easier for him!
