Take A Chance Challenge:
Challenge #3: Birth Year Book. Find a book that was published or copyrighted in the year of your birth. Read the book and write about it.
I choose To Kill A Mockingbird. It was published in July 1960. To Kill a Mockingbird was an immediate bestseller and won great critical acclaim, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961.
Summary: To Kill a Mockingbird is a coming-of-age story of Scout Finch and her brother, Jem, in 1930's Alabama. A gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable tale of coming-of-age in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice, it views a world of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl, as her father -- a crusading local lawyer -- risks everything to defend a black man unjustly accused of a terrible crime.
It has been a couple of years since I've read it and decided to listen this time around. I was surprised that I my reaction was as if I was reading it for the first time. Sissy Spacek did an excellent job reading the book in the voice of Scout.
I listened to the book while I was out walking, a couple of times people looked at me weird when I laughed out loud or shook my head in disbelief.

I always get strange looks when I'm out walking... I usually listen to some podcasts on my iPod which also make me laugh right out loud!
I've only done one part so far of the Take a Chance Challenge. I've got to get moving on it.
Have a good 4th of July!
Argh. There is something disheartening about the thought that I'm older than To Kill a Mockingbird.
I love this book! Good idea to try it on audio.
This is one of my favorite books of all time. I just love it. I keep meaning to get the audio out from the library as I've heard more than once that Sissy Spacek does a great job of reading it. I can't count the times I've been reading something and laughed or got teary eyed and had people looking at me oddly. Too funny.
I've heard great things about Sissy Spacek reading the book. I'll have to listen to it when I'm ready to re-read it.
good choice!
That's a good year to be born in. It's been a few years since I've read To Kill A Mockingbird. Will look into the audio version, as it sounds promising.
I have a habit of reading a book, listening to music and walking at the same time. I'm naturally clumsy, so, at the best of times, it's a bad idea (I've walked into a lamp post, and had my glasses fly off somewhere). At the worst of times, I've had my colleagues greet me, and ask me a question or two, and I ignore them (music on the iPod too loud) and keep reading, standing by my desk. They think I'm slightly weird....
What a great book to get to read again (or listen to again). And I can totally imagine Sissy Spacek reading this book ... she would be a great fit!
