5 Minutes For Books is hosting Children's Classics and this month we are sharing our favorite Newbery book. As I was looking over the Newbery Winners I was surprised to see that the last winner I read was 1994's The Giver by Lois Lowry. I have got some reading to do.
Some of my favorites are Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, Sounder by William H. Armstrong.
A couple of these books my kids read first in elementary school and shared them with me. My mother's best friend was an elementary school teacher and would recommend The Newbery books to me and my kids.
I would have to say my favorite is Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan.
I read the books that continued the story and enjoyed them as well.

I have not read any of those books.
Why is Sarah Plain and Tall your favorite?
I am going to start my own personal Newbery Medal Award book challenge. I am going to read through the list of winners. Just through this Tuesday's Children Classics I have become more interested in the Newbery Books.
Thanks for sharing.
I understand what you mean about not reading a lot of the more current Newbery winners. I have read some since 1994, but few and far between. I suppose I have some homework to do ;)
I did A Wrinkle in Time, which was on the Banned Book list
A Wrinkle in Time
I haven't read any winners since the 90's, either! I was surprised when I saw that.
